9 out of 10

Enjoyed this book immensely. Would love to know what happens next, but it seems the author, Hilary Mantel, always goes on to very different subjects.

Seedy as her descriptions make the 'spiritual' business seem, her descriptions of the mundane & life in the next life make it clear that life's pretty much the same now & after. Dark as the novel is, it's very, very funny at times (gallows humour, someone said) & there's hope in it too.

8 out of 10

Completely absorbing. One of those books that's hard to shake off. I found it difficult to adjust to real life after I'd been reading it. Haunting? Yes, haunting.

This is my first Hilary Mantel book. I would like to read her other novels, but I think I will leave it a bit before seeking them out. I enjoyed the dark humour, the thoroughly nasty characters, the satirical portrayal of dreary suburban life, but too much would be bad for the pysche, I think. I'll be reading something light and silly next.

This will be on its way to msjoanna as soon as she confirms her address.
