Consider Her Ways and Others

I came across this rather battered paperback ('75 UK edition, different cover than shown) at a book sale for local charities that's ongoing at Hannaford supermarket. My cover is all in pink, with a white image of a couple of rats and a hypodermic needle - definitely eye-catching, though I had no idea what the book was about. Turns out Wyndham's the author of such nihilistic SF/fantasy novels as Day of the Triffids and The Midwich Cuckoos, both of which have inspired films (with varying degrees of success). Should be interesting.
Later: interesting indeed! The title story, "Consider Her Ways," was one I'd read before in science fiction anthologies, a wonderfully nihilistic view of a future in which women have split into what are almost separate species, some devoted to bearing children - constantly, and doing nothing else - while others are workers and still others soldiers. [Those who've recognized the source of the title will not be too surprised by this, but the twist the story takes from there might still surprise them.]
The other stories are shorter, and with very different tones and settings. "Odd" is a quirky little time-travel story. "Oh Where Now is Peggy MacRafferty?" has a slightly more comic tone and deals with expectations and ambition. And the other tales touch on time travel, whether one can rewrite the past - and deals with the devil. Glad I found this collection.
