I found this when I was looking for "Among the Hidden," and nabbed it as well. I love de Lint, and I didn't realize he had done children's novels.

(later)

I finished it today - February 15th, 2003 - and I must say, it was quite well done. In a way, as De Lint mentions in the author's notes, it didn't strike me as a children's book at all (nor even a teen book). It would have been right at home in any collection of Newford short stories (indeed, it is a Newford tale).

Nina and Ash are cousins, and not so happy about it. When Ash's parents break up, her mother dies, and her father rejects her, she comes to live with Nina and Nina's family, and starts to feel a terrible anger and rage all the time. But when Nina is targetted by a vengeful manitou, Ash has to get past her own 'punk girl' facade and save Nina - potentially at the cost of her own life.

Very well done!

This was a very interesting young adult fantasy book. I liked the characters and the exploration of Native mythology. This is the first book I've read by Charles Delint and I intend to read more.

Just got it in the mail, am looking forward to reading it..... after exams. If it is as good as his others, will be a ten for sure.
