TBR.
Picked this up at a thrift shop. It has some severe water damage to the cover and first 100 pages or so in the form of wrinkling and "shrinking", but the pages are intact and there is no damage to the printed words. I had wanted to read it for a long time, so it was a bargain for me.

I'm a little more than half way through this book. When I first started it, I wasn't sure I'd like it, but as it goes on I find myself hooked and anxious to know what happens to all the women.

Its written in journal entry style, one chapter to each girl/woman about their life in the Congo with Nathan, the husband/father who is a Baptist Minister.

Their life with the natives is nothing like their city life in Georgia and primitive compared to their 1950's suburban Georgia.

My favourite character so far is Adah. She writes and talks (when she talks) backwards on purpose. Since one my hidden talents is writing in mirror images and I am thrilled by palindromes, she is like a soul sister to me.

I'll write more when I've finished it.

I have to say thanks to Seabass and KatRV for requesting this book next and forcing me to move it to the top of my TBR pile!

Incredible.
The richness of the Congo landscape and culture are depicted so clearly in this novel as a backdrop to the relationships between parents/children - husbands/wives - mother/daughter -sister/sister. The comparisons between the "Amrican" relationships and the Congolese relationships are fascinating. The political history of the Congo pulled the whole thing together.

Not an easy read, but definitely enjoyable and worth the effort.

Adah was still my favourite at the end and I felt sorry for Rachel the most. Only Leah seemed to end up really happy. But they all struggled with demons from their life with Nathan and even whey they tried to leave Africa behind, it was impossible.

Off to Seabass this Tuesday - I'm sure Kat will enjoy it as much as I did.

Once again, I'd like to thank cestmoi for sending this book to me. I had heard a lot about it, and I was really looking forward to reading it.

I tried several times, but I found I just couldn't 'get into it'. I found I really didn't care about these people.

I'll be sending it on to dawni, unfinished, as I know she needs it for a book club read. I will try again, when another copy finds it way to me.

10 out of 10

This is, unequivocally, one of the very best works of fiction I've ever read. I absolutely devoured this book, and as I went along I found myself getting more and more wrapped up in the lives of each of the characters - loving them, despising them, feeling for them - and I never wanted the book to end! When I was finished, I found myself dealing with more questions than answers, in a way... I was definitely left with a number of things to think about even after the experience of reading the book was over.

I'm very much looking forward to our book club discussion (hopefully this weekend). I have visions of us talking for hours, and still not even touching on everything this wonderful book has to offer.

Thanks again, cestmoi, for sharing with me! :)

I actually got the book in Victoria BC from a friend of mine - I was traveling home to FSJ and needed reading material. She had found the book and offered it to me. I have only recently started the book and plan to leave it at the FSJ Cultural Center in hopes someone will enjoy the book also. I love the idea of traveling books - and this one has been on a journey.
