It is year 1141 and two monks, Brother Humilis and Brother Fidelis, are riding to into the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. They are bringing news of war between king Stephen and empress Maud. The war has destroyed their priory and they have now fled to Shrewsbury. Brother senses that these two have a secret that destroy a life, a future and a holy order.

Not the best of the Cadfael chronicles that I have read. Somehow it was too easy to guess what the secret was and it made it a bit boring at times. Though, once again Cadfael found a solution so that everybody came out of the trouble without damage.

Yes, a bit slower than some of the Cadfael mysteries, I agree, but I enjoyed this none the less. The background history is always really well done & here the impact of years of war is brought 'to home'.
