This is the moving chronicle of a man from an ancient culture searching for truth in another world. Tete-Michel Kpomassie is a self-educated native of Togo, Africa. The chance discovery of a picture book on Eskimos fueled his young imagination ... and so began a ten-year odyssey through Europe that led him to the vast, icy shores of Greenland. There he embraced the local Eskimo customs with joy, dining on dog steak, hunting seal, sharing in mate-swapping, and joining in all-night revels.

This is the tale of a modern-day buccaneer, the last of a vanishing breed, told with warmth, gentle humor, and boundless understanding.

7 out of 10

An interesting adventure/travel story, this book compares and contrasts two worlds by taking you from the author's childhood home in steamy Togo, through his brief European period, and into a world of endless cold and strange hospitality. It's full of odd occurences.

He was one of the first Africans to visit Greenland and his approach was that of an adventurer rather than a scholar. This reminded me a bit of a Jack London story in some ways - fairly earthy. Overall, I enjoyed it.

I am counting this as my author from Togo in the Olympic Challenge, in which I'm trying to read things by authors from every country with an Olympics Team.

Gevonden in Helmond in De Kreek op de meeting afgelopen zondag. Leek me wel interessant zo'n gek reisverhaal.
