What a fabulous book!
I must admit I've avoided reading this for years and years. My mum said it was one of her favourite books and suggested I read it several times since I was about 14, however each time the back of the book never grabbed me. But, being one of the BBC Top 100 and kindly RABCKed to me, AND recommended by my mum, I thought I ought to finally give it a go. And I am sooooooo glad I did!
I'm not usually a "family saga" type fan, which I suppose is how The Shell Seekers could be described, however the characters and individual storylines are so beautifully written I was hooked within a few chapters. The interactions between Penelope and her daughters and the intricacies of familial relationships are brought to life with immense skill. Some of the individual "stories" were heartbreaking, some wonderfully uplifting but in either situation I was utterly absorbed. It's a fairly long book, but it really didn't seem it, I was eager for more and was definitely sad it ended, even though it was a satisfying finish.
I think I'll finish my rather uneloquent review there, but I loved it and will almost certainly seek out a copy for my permanent collection and read this again (probably more than once!). Thank you sooooo much for sending this to me bartonz, I may well give another book about generations of one family a go, which I wouldn't have done previously. And will read some more of Rosamund Pilcher!

This will soon be on it's way to JPix as a trade for Strata by Terry Pratchett. I hope you love it as much as I did.
Thanks very much bigcurlyloz! I'm looking forward to reading this, sounds really good. Will pass it on when I'm done.
Not the type of book I usually read but loved it once I was a few chapters in. The lead character is brilliant and I liked the flashbacks to wartime Britain.
