Journal Entry 2 by suedo from Spennymoor, County Durham United Kingdom on Tuesday, November 07, 2006
this was a super read. I was impressed with how honest the writing felt, and how engaging the main character was. I finished it this morning, then got a request for this, so am planning to Ray it, with the last person being AliceF. There is however a twist, as part of my challenge, the book must pass from person to person, and not be posted.

Perhaps I can courier it somewhere... I'm planning to be in London in early April on my way to Charleston and other locations in the US and then home to Oz. I may be able to lend a hand.

So far no takers that far south Skyring, but we'll see what develops. So far we have: AmyAlice - Durham Peamartian - Durham Supertellp - Durham Babyflylady - Durham/Hull? Mrs Danvers - Ely/Cambridgeshire Angellica - North Nottinghamshire (changed round due to a brief absence) Small_blue_pebble - london/essex/suffolk CaterinnaAnna - Coventry/Birmingham AliceF - Coventry I'll be starting it off next week, but if it gets stuck, I'm happy to get it back in order to pass it on, if we don't have people for the middle bits by then.

I enjoyed this more and more as it went on and read it in one sitting. The writing is very honest and gets the image of a bolshy teenager well. taking it up to the meet hopefully for Pea Martian

Journal Entry 8 by PeaMartian from Durham, County Durham United Kingdom on Sunday, March 11, 2007
Fantastic! I love this book. I too read it one sitting, and thoroughly recommend not picking it up to read until you have a few hours to devote to losing yourself in the story. It only took me about 4 hours, and I'm not that fast a reader... anyway, I'm rambling because I enjoyed the book so much... I agree with AmyAlice that the bolshy (but insecure) teenager is very well portrayed, particularly in the way that Daisy asks questions to herself/in her head, but doesn't often say them out loud (for fear of looking stupid/exposing herself to further attention). I also think the book really captures a common feeling: that you know that something is not quite right with the world, but you just don't think about it too much until it impacts on your own day-to-day life (and even then, much of it is confusing, and there doesn't ever seem to be a clear answer to the question "why?"). In summary: An outstandingly good book. Reserved to be passed on to Supertellp at the next Durham meet...

Journal Entry 10 by supertellp from Durham, County Durham United Kingdom on Saturday, April 28, 2007
I found it difficult to get to grips with this book. Once i got a few chapters in I started to enjoy it. By then end I thought that it was very good. This book had it all romance, friendship, war, passion, hardship. Great for a few hours quick easy read with a powerful punch!!

JUst to update you. Angellica is not responding to PMs so I have skipped her and am sending the book on to Mrs Danvers - by post I am afraid as she is a little too far away for me to take by hand. Sorry but as we have a missing link it makes it the chain difficult! :-( Sending to Mrs Danvers in the next parcel run!

Journal Entry 16 by MrsDanvers from Ely, Cambridgeshire United Kingdom on Monday, October 08, 2007
This arrived last week whilst I was on holiday. It appears to have suffered ( or enjoyed) a bath and has been bitten (as in teeth marks) as well. Nothing so exciting shall happen to it here - she said, tempting fate!

Journal Entry 17 by suedo from Spennymoor, County Durham United Kingdom on Tuesday, October 09, 2007
Just wanted to pop up and say that I think the bath and chewing happened before I got the book, and as I remember they were mostly superficial, so hopefully no-one is worried they'll be seen as the one that caused it.

Journal Entry 18 by MrsDanvers from Ely, Cambridgeshire United Kingdom on Sunday, October 14, 2007
Best read in one piece to defeat the lack of real explanatory narrative, and take it as the outpourings of a teenage mind. As this it is honest, real, and touching. However, I wasn't convinced by Meg Rosoff's poorly-fleshed out occupation story as it seemed to borrow much from the Second World War and recent history rather than being original. As the story is "Manhattan self-harming anorexic meets Enid Blyton family" it seems more than a little unreal that Daisy falls for the whole family rather than only racy decadent Edmund. A bit of a mixed bag.

Journal Entry 19 by MrsDanvers from Ely, Cambridgeshire United Kingdom on Thursday, November 22, 2007
Pressures of work make it very unlikely I can get to meet Angelica to pass this on. Unfortunately all of my work trips this year are taking me south and west, whereas last year they were to the North and Midlands. So ,sadly, in order to keep the ring going I shall have to resort to the Royal Mail.

Journal Entry 22 by smallbluepebble from Ilford, Greater London United Kingdom on Sunday, April 13, 2008
Received from Mrs Danvers at a Bookcrossing get-together in Ipswich (books, friends and tiramisu... can it get any better?) I had forgotten I joined this ring, as is often the case. Having seen the previous comments, I've a nagging feeling that I've already read the book. I'll give it another going over on my journeys to work this week, and then I will pass it to CaterinaAnna at the Convention. Thank you for starting this ring Suedo. It was a nice touch, asking everyone to hand over the book in person. And hopefully a few of us will meet again at the convention in London :-)

Journal Entry 23 by smallbluepebble from Ilford, Greater London United Kingdom on Thursday, April 17, 2008
As I suspected, I had already seen this book. I actually registered and read it in September 2006, so I'm not sure why I joined Suedo's ring in December 2006 (a bit of a "senior" moment, I fear!) Anyhow, it was still enjoyable the second time around. I like the fresh and direct style in which the story is told. It feels like reading a personal diary, which provides an intimate and honest account of what is happening. The book was very easy to read; though fast-paced, the plot is very straight forward. The real appeal is in the characters. I simply had to know how things worked out for them all. When I first read this book, I did not realise it was actually aimed at younger readers (it was shortlisted for a number of awards for children's fiction.) This makes sense; the pace, the first person narrative, the teenage angst, and even the length of the book, would all appeal to a younger market. However, at least one scene would make it unsuitable for some children.

Journal Entry 24 by Caterinaanna from Coventry, West Midlands United Kingdom on Sunday, April 20, 2008
I too had forgotten about this ring, but smallbluepebble passed it to me at the Convention and I will get it to AliceF next time I see her - unless she asks me to babysit for her tomorrow night, in which case it will be the time after next, because I can't have a book through my hands without reading it, even if it is one I know I've read before. Should I take a breath now?

Thank you! Lovely to see this book again... I say "again" because I gave away the copy I bought myself yonks ago and then regretted it; so this copy shall stay with me, perhaps travelling a little bit more for local lending, or for a ring.
