What a strange, strange book. The author - a journalist - delves into the world of conpisracy theories, secret societies, right winged groups, religious fantatics etc... Some I have heard of, a lot that I haven't. He either must be a brave man or a very insane one, to persue some of the people and groups that he did. Considering he is a Jew, he put himself in danger several times, looking into Aryian Nations and the KKK.

His writing is laced with humour throughout, but given the material, I could not help laughing and feeling creeped out and astonished atthe same time. There are some seriously messed up people out there, with equally messed up beliefs. *shudders*

Read this (almost) in one sitting last night. It was a really enjoyable read - laugh-out funny in some places and quite unbelievable in others. One thing that did surprise me was that most of the allegations (specifically those about the Bildenberg Group and the Satanist owl sacrificing allegations) did actually have some basis in truth. I went in as a complete skeptic, expecting all of it to be made up!! The chapter I ended up having most distaste for was that about Ian Paisley, who I certainly know of and *possibly* (??) could be considered the most mainstream person included. I think the reason I found his chapter distasteful was that, while the extremists had for the most part been very accommodating (if a little whacko) toward Jon Ronson, Paisley came across as downright rude and also very controlling. I would have liked to have a bit more closure on the Omar Bakri story (tho perhaps this would be forthcoming with a bit of googling?) - was he really Osama Bin Laden's right hand man in London or was it a (rather stupid) practical joke gone wrong? Unsurprisingly, I have even less respect for George Bush, now that I know he dresses up in womens clothes and performs owl sacrifices. :-)

This book will now be passed along to fairy-whispers, who has requested the book as part of the VBBOZ! - http://vbboz.blogspot.com/

This was certainly an interesting and enlightening read. From the dangerous to the harmless to the just plain wacky, Jon Ronson gives a humourous insight into those the world call 'extremist'. By spending time with these people and quoting their own words and deeds, Jon shows that that not all 'extremists' are as extreme as they are portrayed, and sometimes those who do the accusing are, themselves, 'extreme'. This book is definitely worth the read.
