Thanks bookworm-BNE...received in the mail safely a few days ago. Have just forgot to bring this one to work with me until now.
Have already had a quick sneak peak at the first few chapters...I'm not sure what I think yet! A little weird :)

Wow, this one is a hard one to journal.
I enjoyed this book and got through it quickly even though I would probably describe it as a challenging read. It gave me so much to think about. I actually really liked most of the characters, who were flawed in a genuine way - without repelling the reader. I loved the role that Karenin played too.
The almost Brecht-like breaks in narrative were really good for me. I know they might frustrate others but each time the author spoke as an author I really enjoyed the process. Basically, the story stopped, we ‘discussed’ the plot and reflected on the characters motives/prior knowledge etc. and then we moved on. I’m not sure if this is characteristic of the author but I really appreciated it. I also loved swapping between timelines (something that I know annoys some readers) and the way the ‘weave’ of the plot gradually reveals itself.
The themes of ‘gritty-real’ love, the life cycle and relationships (& miscommunications) between humans suited me…although, I probably wouldn’t recommend it to everyone. It also made me realise that I probably should learn more about Philosophy! :) I loved the scenes with Karenin. I stongly identify with Tereza with regards to her relationship with her furry friend.
Sending off to Pixette soon....
....oh, the only thing that annoyed me: Anna Karenin! I was just about to start reading it and WARNING: this book ruins the end for you :) I suppose it is my fault that I haven't read Tolstoy sooner! ha ha...

Yes a difficult novel. Brecht-like is probably a good description - miserable characters going through motions but no call for sympathy or pity - merely enough to be observed and comprehended.
I'm thank bookworm-BNE for sharing as I had only heard of the novel and was very interested considering the extraordinary reviews it has received.
I thought it would be much more colourful and emotive however. I couldn't get much into this book. I had the same reaction to the last Brecht play I was booked to see - I didn't last past interval.

I read this a long time ago but never got to the end. I shall try again, as I do wish to one day finish the story. Now where was I up to??
