When good-time, fortysomething Molly Lane dies of an unspecified degenerative illness, her many friends and numerous lovers are led to think about their own mortality.
If there was a disappointing angle for me perhaps it was the absence of sympathy I could feel for any of the characters in the book: Clive was rather conceited and Vernon somewhat hot-headed and blind to his friend's frustrations at the apparent casualness with which he treated their friendship.
