Thank you, thank you!
It was lovely to unwrap my parcel this morning and find this book, along with a fab handmade card. I sneakily read the first few pages before going to work, and I think I'm going to enjoy it a lot.
I'm having a good birthday; in addition to lovely presents, it's a Friday and the weather is just gorgeous. :)

My first read of 2007 (well, I started it in 2006 but finished it yesterday!) I read through this book very quickly – it really had me hooked. The storyline was really thought-provoking and I felt the method of telling the story through different voices worked well. I have to admit I found some of the dialogue a little stilted, though.
I found it hard to feel much sympathy for Sara – possibly because Anna "spoke" first? – but also found myself thinking that I hope I’m never in that position myself. And the ending … well, there’s a twist and I don’t want to give anything away, but ... gosh, what a situation ...
There’s a reading guide here, which poses some interesting points to ponder.
This was my first Jodi Picoult novel, but I will be looking out for more.

I sent this book on its travels yesterday. I'm very jealous - it's going to be visiting six different countries!

I don't remember reading a book that has affected me so much. I'm not ashamed to admit that I cried for the last 20 or so pages of the book.
It tells the story of Anna, a 13 year-old girl who is suing her parents for medical emancipation so that she doesn't have to undergo major surgery to donate a kidney for her sister Kate, who is terminally ill with a rare form of leukaemia. It tells the story from many differnt first person perspectives including Anna, Sara (her mother, who gives the back story in flashbacks, where we gradually see how her family mamabers developed into who they are in the present time), Brian (her father, a firefighter), Jesse (her brother, who feels ignored by the rest of the family), Campbell Alexander (the lawyer that Anna asks to represent her, who has a secret of his own), and Julia (the guardian ad litum, who is asked by the court to determine whether Anna is capable of making these decisions by herself). Wisely, I feel, Kate doesn't get to be heard until the very end. Each voice brings a different view to the stroy, higlighting different moral questions that are applicable to the case.
I was particulaly impressed by the medical accuracy of the book. It is clear that Jodi Picoult has done an awful lot of research into APL, the type of cancer that Kate has, and the development of different tratments through the years. This really adds to the realism of the book. This is one that will stay with me for a long time after having read it.

Another excelent page turner! I really loved this books, as almost every other from Jodi Picoult I've read so far. It's a really sad story, that makes us question a lot of important issues about life and people. The last pages were really a big surprise...
It will go to bruehwuerfel this week.
Thanks for sharing it dododumpling!
12/03 - sent today.
