The thing I find with David Sedaris is that people either love him or hate him. Now me, I absolutely love anything written by him, but this book would be my favorite - if I was forced to pick one!

I bought another copy of this book, so am turning my somewhat worn copy into a bookring - it travelled with me to Nova Scotia and Newfoundland a few years ago, and had me laughing inappropriately in public many times.

The only thing better than reading something by David Sedaris is listening to him read his stories, so if you like this, try his audiobooks too, or better yet, see him live.

This book was a stitch. Sometimes I was laughing so hard I couldn't see. Had an ironic moment with the book - I was reading in a Chinese restaurant (the segment on teaching, which was particularly funny for me since I'm working as an adjunct right now), when the waitress asked if I liked the book. She had a bit of an accent, but obviously had been living in the US a long time. I said I did - and had she read it? She said yes, she'd liked it a lot. It was only later that I got to chapter "Me Talk Pretty One Day," and wished I'd been able to ask her how she felt about that one! (She talked VERY pretty in English, given that it wasn't her first language!)

Will be mailing off to minerva1221 this weekend.

What great timing! I just finished reading a bookray book this morning and was unsure what to start next. Looks like I have my answer!

Well, Cinnamon-Girl said people either love him or hate him. While I can't say I hated this book, I guess I will be the first in the ring who was bored by it. I forced myself through the first half before I allowed myself to give up. I paged through some of the later chapters and read a few of those, but overall, I wasn't impressed by any of it. My sense of humor must be out of whack because I had heard this book was hilarious and I had such high hopes. Thanks, Cinnamon-Girl, for the chance to find out for myself!

PM'd the next person on the list and will be sending the book along as soon as I know where to send it. UDPATE 12/08: In the mail to Eucalia.

RELEASE NOTES:

I read this book in one day, on Christmas Eve. I have to admit, parts of this book made me laugh out loud (loved the bit when the class was trying to explain Easter), but for the most part I didn't really enjoy it. I just didn't find the author to be a likable person, at least not from his writing. I felt as though if he had been in the room telling me these stories of his life, I would've taken the first opportunity to leave the room and I wouldn't have come back. He was obnoxious. I liked parts, but hated others. I'm a little disappointed as this author came so highly recommended to me. I'm glad to have finally read something by him, though. Thanks, Cinnamon-Girl, for sharing this book with me! I just got back from the post office--the book is on its way to Aisling78.

This book arived this morning -- I'm in the middle of another novel, so it'll be a few days before I start this one. However, I'm a fairly quick lreader so I will have this book read and on it's way within the four week time period.

Journal Entry 11 by Aisling78 from Essex, Massachusetts USA on Monday, January 15, 2007
Some of this book had me laughing so hard I was sure I'd burst something, and other sections were just...not so funny. I'm glad I had the opportunity to read this book for myself, since I have heard so much about it. The sections about his French classes while in France were hysterical, especially the part where the students attempted to explain Easter, just as a previous bookcrosser pointed out. I wish the entire book was focused on his time in France, because for me, that was the stronger portion of this book.

I'll be PMing the next in line, and will be sending this book on it's way sometime this week. Thank you, Cinnamon-Girl, for including me in your bookring.

Well...another so-so opinion!! There were some parts that I found very funny but the rest was just so-so. I found that I didn't really connect with the author and found myself just not that interested in his stories. My favorite part of the book was in "The Late Show" chapter when we are introduced to his daydream entitled "Mr. Science" where he cures diseases not to stop any suffering but for his own selfish reasons. I was more intrigued with the stories about his sister Amy than his own stories. Any ways.....thanks for sharing Cinnamon-Girl. I have PM'ed next in line - waiting for address.

This was one of the best books I have read in a long time. I was trying to hold in my laughter at the Dr.'s office - they probably thought I was insane. I haven't laughed at a book like this one in a long time. Thanks for sharing with me! I have PMed the next person and am waiting for an address.

lucky for me - came just in time for a holiday!
i'll admit it: i was disappointed. i liked the second half of the book much more than the first one. there were some very funny parts that had me giggling. i loved See You Again Yesterday. but it was also sad. i felt really bad for his father most of the first half. (and not to be a geek, but it bothered me that i am missing a sibling - we get to hear about lisa, gretchen, amy, paul, the author and....? he said there were 6 of them. . and while i am at it, i also thought they were the best characters in the book.)

glad i got a chance to read it
thank you so much for sharing!!!

PMed sudokugirl and will ship ASAP

One of the most entertaining books I've read lately. I'm definitely going to look up some of his other works. Thanks for sharing, Cinnamon-Girl.

Yinny has asked to be skipped, so this book will be on its way back to Cinnamon-Girl as soon as I have her address.

Another successful bookring! Thanks to all who joined and kept this going - I appreciated your comments and am glad some of you found Sedaris as entertaining as I do. For those who didn't enjoy it, thank you for your honesty and at least giving it a try. One of the most interesting things for me in talking with other readers is seeing where reading tastes converge and differ, and this ring was a great example of that!

I've decided that I don't need to get this copy back, so sudokugirl can do with this book as she wishes.

Happy Crossing, Everyone!
