I read this a few months back with my book group but I don't really remember it. I just have bits and pieces of it floating around my head. :0 What I do remember I really liked.
Back cover blurb...
Twenty-four years after her first novel, Housekeeping, Marilynne Robinson returns with a story about fathers and sons and the spiritual battles that still rage in America's heart. In the luminous and unforgettable voice of Congregationalist minister John Ames, Gilead reveals the human condition and "manages to convey the miracle of the existence itself."

I thought this book meandered quite a bit, old Reverend John Ames passing on his wisdom and his "begats" to the young son he will leave behind when he dies in the near future.
The religious thoughts espoused were long-winded and thus a little boring and I really didn't engage with the storytelling until he brought in the human element of the failings of his godchild (Jack) John Ames Boughton and his inability to forgive him for his youthful fathering and abandonment of a child. The book ended up being one of forgiveness when the two of them were able to share in Jack's current predicament of his marriage "in the eyes of God" to a black woman and the birth of his son.
A book about the testing of faith and well written from the point of view of a man by a female author. Thanks for sharing fizzfred.

Thank you, meganh, for your kindness in sending me this book which was on my wish list, and also for the cute postcard! The book came in while I was away visiting family for three weeks in Georgia, so it was a nice surprise when I arrived home! I look forward to reading it and will pass it along when finished. Thanks again for sending all the way from Australia! Bless you!
I gave this book a good try but couldn't get into it. Once started, I rarely give up on a book, but this one just never took off for me so I'll be wild releasing it soon. Thanks again, meganh, for sending!
