Don't let the cheesey cover (different from the one shown here) put you off - MacLean is considered a master of detailed and intense thrillers.

Interesting facts from Wikipedia: MacLean's mother tongue was not English, but Scottish Gaelic. He was awarded a Doctorate of Literature at the University of Glasgow in 1983. After his death, he was buried a few yards from Richard Burton in Céligny, Switzerland.
