10 out of 10

This book is one of the funniest I have ever had the pleasure to read.
Well, that's not exactly true, because I haven't actually read it myself, but had it read to me by the incomparable Hugh Laurie, which made the experience even more delightful.

I've heard, this story of 3 men (to say nothing of the dog!), who decide to go on a boat trip along the Thames, is somewhat of a classic in british literature - and as well it should be!

I copied the CDs onto my mp3-player to be able to take the book with me wherever I go. Although I have to admit it is really rather embarassing to walk through town, almost doubled up with supressed laughter and attract all kinds of strange looks from passers-by. I can't listen to it anymore while I'm driving. It's just not possible to concentrate on the traffic.

Well, thanks to modern technology I am able to share my delight with people all over the world. I'm gonna start a bookring with this.

Ok, so this is going to be a bookring.

Here is the list of participants so far:

beekeeper40
weesisj
j4neyo
Alice-Eve
indygo88

It seems that the original CDs got lost somewhere, so I will send out 2 sets of replacement CDs to the remaining participants, one for the overseas leg of the ring and one for the Europeans. Should the original CDs ever resurface somewhere, I would be very grateful if the finder could send them back home to me.

Overseas list:

Ibis3
genielady
catsalive (Australia))

European list:

myntti
GirlFromIpanema
Washti
boagat
bluecat07
kizmiaz <- CDs made it all the way to the end of the list this time, kizmiaz is free to do with them whatever he wants now.

Well, and because of it being an audiobook, it shouldn't be much of a problem to send it on in a reasonably short time. By which I don't mean the day after you get it, but, let's say, about 2 weeks should be doable.
Naturally, from a legal point of view I have to tell you, that if you should copy the contents of the CDs onto your harddrive or mp3-player or whatever, you are required to delete them once you listened to them and are not allowed to keep them or distribute them in any way. But of course you all know that already, right? ;-)

Just make a journal entry when it arrives and let us know when you send it on, just for everybody to be able to keep up with its progress. You can always edit the entries later, when you've actually listened to it.

7 out of 10

I finally listened to this today on my mp3 player. I am embarrassed to admit that it took me longer than it should've to figure out that Montmorenci was a DOG! (*blushing*) I thought overall it was quite enjoyable, although a bit abrupt at the end. It seemed very "British" to me as far as the humor, which is neither a good or bad thing. :') I esp. enjoyed the bit about the maze. LOL!

I posted it earlier today to editorgrrl, so it should be somewhere in the postal system on its way right now!

Arrived on Saturday (23rd Dec) but I couldn't journal it because our pc died on Wednesday and it took until today to get up and running - I've lost all emails and much of my BookCrossing stuff, so I'll be after addresses and other info. - sorry - I'll get this on the way as soon as humanly possible. I'm so sorry about all your troubles with this ring, samulli. Do you remember, we 'met' over a stalled ring! The replacement is nearly home already!!
Good luck with this one. I'm really looking forward to driving again - but that's another story.

First, let me apologize for my tardiness in journaling and passing on this set. My only excuse is that I'm in school and it got lost in the shuffle.

Hugh Laurie is the perfect actor to read this book. The humor matches him in his "Jeeves and Wooster" vein nearly to a 't', except that I think Jerome K. Jerome's character may be smarter than Wooster! I enjoyed these tremendously.

The CD's are on their way to Finland. I've only listened to half of the story, actually twice. So far I really like it... it's funny and like I said before, I love being read to. :-) I'll probably listen to the whole thing next Saturday, on my more than 2 hour bus trip to my parents. Listening to it while I'm doing something else is not an option because I just lose track of the story. Listening to it in bed is no good either, I fall asleep and wake a little while later having missed a part of the story.

Anyway, thanks for sharing samulli! Myntii, enjoy!

Thanks for sending these CDs my way, carlissa! And thanks to samulli for sharing. :)

These actually arrived a few days ago, but I kept forgetting to bring the darn things inside the house to journal (I left them in my car, not in the garden or something).

I'm actually nearly finished listening to them, so rather than copying them, I'll soon just be sending them on their way to the next person.

Let me just state for the record that I think Hugh Laurie is a god! His voice, his comic timing, everything about him. He is one of the few justifications for human cloning. ;-)

I'll listen and have these on their way soon.

Loved it! I was giggling quite a bit during my work commutes while listening to this little gem. Laurie provides the perfect voice to these characters. However, I think my favorite character is Montmorency. :)

Now that I've listened to this version, I really want to actually read the book and its sequel Three Men on the Bummel.

Thanks so much for sharing this. It brought some happy smiles.

I mailed this set of CDs on to Ibis3 on Monday 2 April. Enjoy!

Journal Entry 40 by Ibis3 from Newcastle, Ontario Canada on Saturday, April 28, 2007

9 out of 10

It took me a while to get the picture of Bertie Wooster out of my head, but I so love Hugh Laurie & pretty soon I'd managed to let that image go. As for the book itself, I've heard so much about it over the years, I think my expectations were extremely high. I thought I would be laughing myself into tears and stopping the playback every minute or so to recover. It *was* funny, and delightful & perfect to listen to at this time of year--it certainly made me want to go on a boat trip (though I'm afraid I have the same liver complaint as J. and so would want to leave the work to others--supervising suits me to a 'T')--but it was a light kind of funny. I know there is a sequel, but I do wish there was more of *this* one. I really enjoyed the digressions into pastoral poetic description and romance. I think I'll copy these before I send them on, so I can listen to it when I'm in a melancholy mood--just the perfect thing to pick up one's spirits.

Next on Mt. TBR is Hugh Laurie's first novel, The Gun Seller.

I've PM'd catsalive.

I also had a problem with one of the CDs but in my case it was the first one. I couldn't listen to the whole Tracks 3 und 4 as it started to sound strange and then passages were missing, but maybe it is my stereo. The second CD was ok though.

I really enjoyed what I have heard. I always had to chuckle about the dry British humour and the incidents that happened to the three men.

Thanks for sharing, samulli!

The European audiobook will travel to Portugal as of tomorrow...

What a pleasant time I had listening to this story. Hugh Laurie is simply brilliant as a reader, is diction is perfect and he really embodies the characters moods.
The first cd had a few glitches on track 3 but is listenable.
As for the story itself it’s just a jolly fun “read” and I laughed pretty much all the way, especially with the characters definitions of hard work and who’s doing the most of it.
The description of the journey and the misadventures of the four travellers is ironic and it brushes shoulders with sarcasm a lot of the times.
I love having stories read to me and this one was one of the most fun, I had to actually turn it up because I was laughing so much I couldn’t hear what Hugh Laurie was reading.
A truly enjoyable time.

I found it quiet amusing!
Loved the part about them not having a tin openener and trying to open the tin with out one - and also the way that the dog and his owner take a different approach to seeing a cat!

Highly recommend this story.
Will have to see if the author has any other books available...If you know of any can you let me know?
