Trouble in Transylvania
2 journalers for this copy...
Another book picked up in my local Red Cross.
To be read and released in Prague.
Cassandra, a 40something traveller and translator, meets 2 groups of Americans on the train on the way to Budapest. Little does she know that she will soon be embroiled in a murder mystery in a spa town Transylvania. Gladys, who is on holiday with her granddaughter, has eletrocuted her doctor, but all is not what it seems.
There are various obstructions into finding out the truth, the political situation in the recently democratic Romania - including the tensions between ethnic Romanians and Hungarians and the mess left behind after the fall of Ceausescu-, adoption of Romanian babies left in orphanages by their mothers, who in some cases had been denied birth control or abortions and had no way of feeding them.
There is a lot of information here, sometimes presented humerously, also the slightly extreme characters serve to simplify a very complicated situation. You get what you take out, so you could read this and think a lot about the various issues, or just read it as a murder mystery.

I surprised myself by getting caught up in it. At first it seemed like it would be kind of goofy, but it was published by Virago, and had a blurb from Ursula K. LeGuin on the back, so I gave it a shot.
Found it in Meduza, one of the my favorite little cafes, and will probably leave in at another cafe, possibly in Prague 7.
