Ten Thousand Sorrows

Memoir of a daughter of a Korean peasant and an American GI. Ostracized from her family, her mother punished for dishonoring her family, she is sent to an orphanage and eventually adopted by an American couple. Once in America, she still doesn't escape fanaticism and prejudice.
Quick read, good book. Recommended!

Grabbed from the Spam, Plants, etc. book box. Thanks!
It saddens my heart to know what some children have to endure. This was a very sad story. Somehow it doesn't seem right to say I enjoyed the book. So I guess I'll just say it was a very good read.

Received this book today from Betsy-Stl as the first person in the Book Ray. Can't wait to get started!
I finished this book last night. I had mixed feelings about it. It is very sad and made me angry. I guess we tend to think and hope that people who are adopting children from other countries are really giving them a better life. This blew that idealistic notion right out of the window. And I guess in this day and age we would hope that the "Christian" orphanages would be tending to ALL of the children's needs, emotional as well as physical, but again that was not the case here. I was angry at her birth family, the orphanage and her adoptive family. The all were responsible for her psyche, and they all failed miserably. I kept waiting for "something" to happen at the end. Maybe a reaction from her birth family or her adoptive family after she wrote the book. I even thought maybe her birth father might come out of the woodwork. I guess I'm just a dreamer and an idealist at heart. I don't usually read books like this because they are so depressing, but I guess it's a good wake up call sometimes.
I'll be sending this to Bluebird24 today. I'm anxious to hear what others think.

I PMed Bluebird24 aka Glowingdove in April of 2003 after seeing other BC'ers concerns about her keeping their bookring books posted on the book wishlist forum. She PMed me and said that she recieved my bookring book, "Ten Thousand Sorrows" on March 31, 2003 and that she would make a journal entry, read it and pass it on to the next reader. It is now May 17, 2004, 14 months later and she still hasn't made a journal entry or passed the book on.
