The Kite Runner

This is a story about a boy from a privileged Afghan family growing up in the 1970's before the terrible wars in the country.
I really didn't know much about Afghanistan and I'm so glad I read this, so I feel a little bit closer to understanding all the complexities of the country.
This book also helped remind me: these are just ordinary people trying to find happiness and raise their families. The main character narrates his own story and he is so honest about his failures and fears, it's touching and easy to relate to such 'humaness'.
The story took some turns I didn't expect - just one more factor which kept me reading almost non-stop for a few days. I felt so many different emotions by the time I finished - angry at the many injustices, amazed at the sacrifices and faithfulness of Ali and Hassan, touched by the love of Soraya and Amir for each other.. this book touches on so many life-realities. It's worthwhile hunting for!
