This is indeed an excellent book, both heartening and saddening. I was struck by how similar the situation was to that of Germany in the past, in terms of the way the ordinary people accept a slide into behaviour they would not otherwise tolerate, because they feel helpless. One of the best ways to combat this is education.
This book gave me an insight into what has happened to afghanistan as a country, where before I knew almost nothing. I hope to make time to find out more as a result of this book.
Will pass it to BabyFlylady at the next durham meet.

Wow! What can I say. This is an excellent book and a sad story. Hosseini as a storyteller has made this both insightful and moving.

The book paints pictures of old Afghanistan, which are nostalgic and romantic. It also highlights the horror of life under the Taliban, which is reminisant of Hilter's regime in WW2.

Thank you Suedo for sharing this treasure. I will PM Peamartian for her address and arrange to post it, as I didn't finish it in time to pass to her on Thursday night! Typical!!

I can't believe I had this gem sat on my shelf for nearly 2 years before I finally picked it up and read it! Having finally picked it up, I read it within a week! An engrossing story, and beautifully vivid descriptions of life in Afghanistan, which makes the darker parts of the book all the more moving. I feel as though this book has given me a better insight into Afghanistan than the non-fiction "The Bookseller of Kabul", by providing such clear pictures of locations and depth of characters. A great read, even though it is very grim in places.

Thanks very much for this peamartian. I'm really looking forward to reading it! Slightly ironic that I've probably seen this exact copy of the book before but haven't picked it up ;)

This is a beautifully described book, that regularly brought me to tears (pretty much without fail when I was on public transport!). The story pulls you in, and you really feel for all of the main characters.
I will now pass it on to another teacher here, with strict instructions to journal it ;)
