8 out of 10

this came through my "read the first five pages" email book club, and for whatever reason i didn't add it to my wish list. (first five pages weren't a good judge of the rest of the book i guess!) i recognized the title when in Goodwill the other day, then realized it was set in Philadelphia so i had to pick it up :)

but it was a fascinating story. i couldn't put it down! gratuitous sex scene notwithstanding. the ending was a little confusing, too, and seemed to leave nothing resolved. but i think that was part of what made it so interesting!

From the back of the book:
It is the 1920s, and Spiritualism is all the rage. With seances taking place in parlors across the country and Harry Houdini and Sir Arthur Conan doyle arguing metaphysics in the papers, the media embraces the feverish obsession with the paranormal. Twenty-three-year-old Harvard graduate Martin Finch is sent by Scientific American on the investigative opportunity of a lifetime; an examination of the powers of Philadelphia "society psychic" Mina Crawley. But Finch, prepared to debunk a fraud, instead finds himself falling under the spell of the beguiling Mrs. Crawley--and uncovering a truth darker than any one he could have imagined.

I just realized I've had this book in my possession for quite a while. I made the mistake of filing it as a book to keep instead of a bookring! I will read asap and send out. My sincerest apologies to surfenkitten!

Very nicely written, I was dissapointed with the ending. I agree with you surfenkitten-it was much too confusing. All in all it was time well spent.

Mailing this out today!

I'm sorry, life has been getting in the way of a lot of fun things lately. I completely forgot to journal this and forgot that it was a bookring.

The writing kept things flowing along even when the author kept me guessing about what was really happening.

I will contact the next person and get this back on its journey as soon as possible.
