Picked up in a charity store in West Kensington. Sounds like an amazing tale of how an extraordinary woman gave the author an ordinary life.

10 out of 10

Absolutely amazing story of one womans total disregard for religious, cultural, social or any other kind of barriers you can think of. This woman overcame discrimination from every angle not by tackling head on but by simply ignoring it. An outsider from the start, Ruth McBride is inspiration personified. I can't imagine how she raised her brood of twelve mixed race children - for a long stretch as a single mother - in such a politically and socially unstable period of American history but she did it, and they all (every single one of em) went on to highter education.

Placed in the UK bookbox for someone else to enjoy

10 out of 10

I just received this from inkognitoh in the UK book box. I have read this before - in fact there is already a copy of it on my bookcrossing shelf! - so I will return it to the book box for the next person to enjoy. However, this is a brilliant book, really enjoyable and I would encourage the next person who finds it to give it a try.

Arrrrgh! I took this from the UK bookbox a couple of months ago and don't know how I forgot to journal it at the time. But here's my entry now ...

I really enjoyed this book. I was most impressed by James McBride's mothers attitude to life and the discrimination she faced daily. She refused to even acknowledge, never mind by imtimidated by, the verbal abuse and rejection she was subject to. An amazing, strong woman.

Currently loaned to a friend F who says she's rather give it back to me to release than join BC.

1 June: Returned from F and ready to release

Released on Sunday, June 08, 2003 at Ben Rinnes in Dufftown, Moray Scotland.

I left this book tucked under a few stones on the summit of Ben Rinnes (240m/2755ft) about lunchtime today. It's on one of the stones just down a few metres from the summit trig point.

We set off from the carpark in sunshine, but experienced persistent drizzle before the summit. But I did NOT care one iota! It was so great to be out on the hills again (albeit a small one) after months tied to my desk studying. The book is snuggly wrapped in a zipped polybag and hopefully will be secure until found. We passed at least ten people going up as we came down, so hopefully someone will take it today.

PS the sun came out again - very brightly - just as we got back to the car -- isn't that always the way!
