wow! I got the only book from the whole bunch of book hunt baits in which I was interested (alas only after the hunt). My goodness, it was dangerously placed on top of a dustbin ... Now I feel like a true rescuer =^.^=
sigh. These are short stories – from a novelist. That is, they are sort of morsels of novels, like randomly cut out of a big plot.
A short story, methinks, should be expressed in epigrammatic manner, should include a whole story and be selfcontained. These bits of writing are not at all pointed but leveled flows from the beginning to the end. Flows of self evidently brillant handled language ^__^
But what should I do with a Dickens-biography? I knew most of it already and was not very interested on Irving’s literature homework. The most appealing story I found The Pension Grillparzer - since I’ve read Hotel New Hampshire and could see the primary idea thereof.
It looks as Irving (the publishers?) had ransacked the author’s archive of earlier publications to construct a supplementary. The collection was published in 1993, when Irving recovered from the making of The Cider House Rules. His lately belletristic success (Owen Meany) was four years ago. I suppose this was more or less a book to say: Irving still lives.
