A recent Brisbane BC meet was held at Mary Ryan's bookshop & cafe in Paddington. Even though my bag was heavy with all the books I had picked up at the table, I couldn't leave without buying a couple (this one included) as well. Incorrigible!

Henning Mankell is one of my favourite authors, so I was really looking forward to reading this book. It is completely and utterly different from his other books set in Sweden. Gory murders and police detective vs. Paulo Coehlo-like spiritual fable.

As usual I was inundated with bookrings and two of my friends (also Mankell crime fans) got to read it first. The vote was unanimous, his best book ever! This week I finally got around to reading and registering it and I agreed - it is beautifully written. This book is in my Permanent Collection but I will lend it.

"Nelio is dead. And however unlikely it may sound, it seemed to me that he died without once being afraid. How can that be possible?

World famous for his Kurt Wallander mysteries, Henning Mankell has been published in thirty-five countries, with more than 25 million copies of his books in print. In Chronicler of the Winds, he gives us something different: a beautifully crafted novel that is a testament to the power of storytelling itself. On the rooftop of a theater in an African port, a ten-year-old boy lies slowly dying of bullet wounds. He is Nelio, a leader of street kids, rumored to be a healer and a prophet, and possessed of a strangely ancient wisdom.

One of the millions of poor people “forced to eat life raw,” Nelio tells his unforgettable story over the course of nine nights. After bandits cruelly raze his village, he joins the legions of abandoned children living in the city’s streets. An act of the imagination, an effort to prove to his comrades that life must be more than mere survival, cuts short Nelio’s life.

Already published in thirteen countries, Chronicler of the Winds was short-listed for the Nordic Council Prize for Literature and was nominated for the Swedish Publishers Association’s August Prize."

Originally published as 'Comedia Infantil' in Swedish in 1995, the English translation only came out in 2006.

Arrived a few days ago - safe and sound. I have started the first chapter and it has caught my attention. After a weekend of easy light reads this is probably what I need.
(thanks bookworm-BNE!)

Ah! I'm tempted to blame it on my crazy schedule at work...but it took me ages to get back to this book. Unfortunately when I did I just wasn't in the right frame of mind :(

I tended to skip sections, go back to bits and read the book in a very strange way. Despite all this, I still enjoyed it:

The story is fantastic and the themes are important and engaging. I'm ashamed to say that I did skip to the end after the disappearance of a character because I was so interested in learning if they would come back into the story...I wish I could have given this book more of my attention. Sorry Bookworm-BNE!!! But thank you, for sending it out on this bookring. I'm glad I've read it, even if I was disorganised in my approach.

Will send this treasure on its way...
