8 out of 10

Arrived safely at the beginning of the week in my MBag (Thank you, Rosie!!). I took it out, remembered it was a wishlist book that I've wanted to read for ages...and sat back and read it in one go! I thought it was a lovely timeless story, and really enjoyed Hanff's humour in the letters. A captivating, quick read. I'll pass it on very soon (and will see what actually stands at 84 Charing Cross Rd when I'm in London next!)
Thanks, Appa!

Thank you very much, I'll enjoy this as I haven't got all my books out of boxes yet. I've just moved house so I'm a little stressed with no time to read and that is the worst thing in the world!

I read this in bed this morning, quite a good quick read. I loved the sense of humour in the letters between Helene and Frank and all the other people in the bookstore come to that. It was a warm little book about a love of books and history and quite sad that Helene never visited 84 Charing Cross Road. Maybe she's been since. Who knows?

The book arrived today, thanks. I started reading it the moment I got it out of the envelope even if I have two and a half ringbooks to finish before this one. I just couldn’t help it, the Finnish translation of 84, Charing Cross Road happens to be one of my all-time favorites. But I’ll put the book back to the envelope and take it out when I really do have time for it. *Sigh.*
I almost forgot: Thank you, halonhakkaaja, for the lovely postcard as well!

What is this BookCrossing anyway? I mean, you join it thinking that by releasing books you’ll get rid of the excess of them and, eventually, your shelves will be satisfied because they don’t have to carry that much weight anymore. That’s how it is supposed to be, huh? And then——what happens? Firstly, you find out that other BCers seem to take the releasing part much more seriously and books just keep coming your way. Secondly, you notice you begin to buy more and more books and keep finding new places where to get them a bit cheaper (you wish!) or free of charge even. Thirdly, by keeping in touch with other BCers, browsing the forums, your fellow BCers’ bookshelves, journal entries, etc. you’ll be introduced to many interesting authors whose books you’ve just got to read. And fourthly, because of all these BookRings, BookRays, and BookWhatever you get to read books you’re already familiar with, in your native language, for instance. You might even own that particular book in your own language but then, oh no, you have to have the original language copy, too! Finally, you’ll realize that your books just keep accumulating.
It’s a vicious circle. That’s what it is, BookCrossing.

**
I do have Rakas vanha kirja by Helene Hanff permanently in my actual bookshelf. I read it again once in a while. It’s absolutely one of my all-time favorites. And now I just have to buy 84, Charing Cross Road too! I don’t think I could live without it now that I know that it really exists. And that it is, if possible, even more charming and lovely, funnier and wittier than the Finnish translation. Thanks a million, halonhakkaaja. You’re on my blacklist now. Or will be——as soon as I make one. Niora too. For passing the sequel to 84, Charing Cross Road around as a BookRing. I didn’t even know there was a sequel. Mind you, Niora, it’s not all you’re guilty of...

Did I mention that I adore this book? Love it. Thanks for sharing it with me, I think ;-)

*****
Next one on the list is thy. I’ve already got her address and will mail the book tomorrow.
Edit July 23. Mailed the book today.

I was the last for this bookray so the book is available. Although I might read it again before it continues its travels.

Quick read. Didn't really enjoy this book, expected more. Don't really know why I didn't like it, I just found Hanff to be a really irritating person.

I loved this! When I read it, I remembered that I had read it a long time ago. I love the talk about books (well, quite rare books, books I wouldn't dare to read - too difficult for me -- exept the Austen's, of course) and I loved the fact that the British were so British! I'm not sure if I've seen the movie about this or not, but I'd like to see it now.

Thank you Chania, a wonderful delivery containing this book from the book relay, some chocolate, a fridge magnet and a beautiful Christmas card arrived today.

It is great to be able to read this well-travelled book. I am wondering if I shall take this to London with me next week and release it on the Charing Cross Road :). If not, the book will most likely travel forward as a wishlist surprise.

Oh what an adorable book! So warm relationships between people separated by an ocean. On the other hand it is timeless and however very old-fashioned, business and also invoicing being conducted only via letters, very personal ones. This added the charm, as the current rushed atmosphere is totally non-existent in this book. The letters sent from London also have a lovely British feel in them.

Based on her letters, Helene has a sharp sense on humour and perhaps also a need for new companions. I must admit my sophistication would not be even nearly enough for the books she requests to be sent from London, naturally not including the Austens :).

I did visit Charing Cross Road in London about two weeks ago, but this time only briefly by visiting the Foyles bookshop located there. So this book did not become a wild release in London, but I am planning on sending it forward as a wishlist surprise to Norway.

I enjoyed this! I always loved reading letters and mail correspondence because it tells so much about a person and there is so much to read between the lines. The way this started as a business correapondence between a customer and a bookshop and developed into friendships over many years fascinated me.

In 2007 I visited London for a couple of days and I fell in love with this little bookshop "Henry Pordes Books Ltd." in Charing Cross Road. I'm going back to London in June and will then visit som bookshops in Caring Cross Road again and sit down for a coffe at Cafe Vergnano, 62 Charing Cross Road. http://blog.davidkaspar.com/archives/2005/09/cafe-vergnano-62-charing-cross-road-london.php

A heartwarming and adorable little book about the love of books. It is interesting to follow the conversation across the Atlantic, such different style of the letters. The humour is great, and it is very nice to follow the relationship that grew into a warm friendship over the years.
