In her newest novel in the #1 "New York Times" bestselling series, Nora Roberts writing as J.D. Robb returns to the New York city of 2059, where Lieutenant Eve Dallas will struggle to solve murder of a seemingly ordinary family, and protect one small, terrified survivor

Nine year old Nixie Swisher gets up in the middle of the night to get a forbidden orange fizzy. While up she catches a glimpse of a shadow entering her housekeeper's room. Thinking they are about to do the naughty Nixie watches only to see her housekeeper murdered. The murderer goes up the stairs and proceeds with another assailant to murder her whole family and her best friend whom she left asleep in her room.

Eve must find out who wanted to kill this upstanding family. This is an ordinary family with no person who holds any grudges against them. Eve has a sense that Nixie is not safe. The killers wanted her whole family dead and she is still alive.

Robb spins it out in this story. The reader does not know what is going on and there are lots of twists and turns. You have to love Eve in that she knows she is no good with children but she does her best and really tries with Nixie. Robb keeps on with great character development in this series and I will be looking forward to the next in the series.

This is with me now

Nine year old Nixie Swisher was in her kitchen getting an orange fizzy when her entire family was murdered in their sleep. She too was supposed to be killed, but getting that drink saved her life. Lieutenant Eve Dallas gets the case and keeps Nixie safe in her house while she hunts for the killers. Eve isn't very good with kids, adding to her stress as she tried to piece together the puzzle. This murder seemed harder for her to solve than some previous ones. The team had to grind data a bit more than usual, but that helped made the story more believable.

I enjoyed how uncomfortable it was having a kid around for Eve and Roarke. I hope Nixie returns in some later stories. Roarke says he wants kids with Eve eventually but I can't see her ever becoming a parent. Beyond that, I felt like the motive was rather weak. Why would multiple people agree to help someone with their revenge? It just didn't make sense to me.

My mom, AceofHearts, passed away from breast cancer on September 17, 2013. Aside from being one of the best people I know, she was an avid reader and took immense pleasure in Bookcrossing, her book club, and reading many great books. This book is one that we both read, as we had been reading J.D. Robb's 'In Death' series together, and she listed as available to pass along to someone else.

I will be releasing this in my mom's memory.
