On Beauty is a re-telling of E.M. Forster's Howards End, set in the fictional college town of Wellington, Massachusetts, at a college of the same name. I read this book immediately after finishing Howards End (a sequence I would recommend), and absolutely loved it for the clever echoes of the original, and for the quick and hilarious dialogue. Zadie Smith's characters feel so real they leap off the page, and her contemporary exploration of many of the same themes which preoccupied Forster (love, connection, authenticity, missed opportunity) was every bit as poignant as the original.
