Well, crumbs, I'm glad I wasn't a woman in China when this book was set. I'm also glad I wasn't one of the men in this story. They're not very nice. Probably just doing what men did (and well, still do, but with fewer excuses) but history doesn't excuse everything, does it.

Unusual style which means you have to stick with the book for quite a long time before it pulls you in. But worth persevering with, if only for a glimpse of another culture.
