Subtitle: A Novel of Pearl Harbor

2007 Nēnē Award Winner

A few corrections:

* Hickam Field (later known as Hickam Air Base, and currently part of Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam), not Hickman
* Bufo (toad), not buffo
* The 442nd Regimental Combat Team was composed of men from Hawaii and from the mainland US, including some whose families were in the relocation camps (and they volunteered anyway!).

Comments:

* Solomon Kaulukukui (mentioned in the acknowledgments) was a star football player at the University of Hawaii..and a real gentleman.

* There were also a number of civilian casualties in Hawaii on December 7, 1941, some caused by enemy action and some caused by "friendly" anti-aircraft fire.

* My mom says her father went to help with the cleanup at the shipyard afterwards and didn't come home for a couple of days. He would never talk about what he saw. *His* father was interned at Sand Island and later sent to the mainland as an "enemy alien" even though I think he'd been in Hawaii for about 40 years by then, and all his children & grandchildren were American citizens.

* My father was born in California; if his family had stayed there they would've ended up in the internment camps. Instead, they moved back to Hawaii in 1940, and my father and his sister had two narrow escapes from the Japanese on December 7, 1941. They were living in Wahiawa, and left early that morning to visit their mother in Honolulu. Shortly after they left, a Japanese plane crashed into the house they were living in, and the house burned down (fortunately everyone escaped). Meanwhile, the car my dad & his sister were riding in was shot at by a Japanese plane - as they were ducking down to avoid the bullets my aunt was saying "Damn Japs!" No one was injured, but the car was full of holes.
