Memory is a funny thing. I read the blurb on the back and wasn't quite sure if I'd read it before: I thought maybe I had, but I wasn't positive...there was something in the back of my head about taking a bath in the fountain, but I couldn't be sure it was from *this* book.
As soon as I opened the book to the page with Mrs. Frankweiler's letter (and the illustration), the image made the switch in my head click, and I knew I *had* read it before. The copy I had before must've had a different cover or I probably would've remembered that.
I found this book on this list of challenged books. I wonder if it's because of the illustration of the kids in the fountain. Or maybe it's the running away from home part, or the hiding in the museum after hours part..or the cutting school part or... :p
I like this bit:
I think you should learn, of course, and some days you must learn a great deal. But you should also have days when you allow what is already in you to swell up inside of you until it touches everything. And you can feel it inside you. If you never take time out to let that happen, then you just accumulate facts, and they begin to rattle around inside of you. You can make noise with them, but never really feel anything with them. It's hollow.
Here's another copy on my shelf.
