I met Catherine when she was Writer in Residence at Canterbury, and bought this book around the same time, feeling guilty that I'd never read any of her stuff. Since then, it's sat on my bookshelf collecting dust, so I'm going to actually read it now, and then get it moving again.

I think I was putting off reading this because I was scared I wouldn't like it, but I actually really enjoyed it. It tells the stories of Patrick, an elderly expert in ancient manuscripts; Ruth and Malcolm, whose daughter went missing many years ago; and Colette, a young university student flatting in the big city. The narrative viewpoint jumps back and forth from past to present, and from character to character, but that added to the story rather than detracting from it (it can be a great technique when it's done well, and here it is done well).

I enjoyed this novel - the stories are quietly interwined with one another. Given back to Futurecat for release/gifting at the Welly Convention.

Dropped off at my place today by a friend of Cathietay's. Now I just have to find an empty corner in my luggage to squeeze it in to...

Added to the groaning "book buffet" table at the convention.

Journal Entry 6 by Sherlockfan from Upper Hutt, Wellington Province New Zealand on Thursday, May 10, 2007
Don't know where this book has been since the February convention but it arrived at the Wellington May Meet-up in Mac's Brewery Bar and Restaurant.

I went to the meet-up determined not to take home a lot of books because I'm in the middle of boxing our myriad of books prior to moving house. Couldn't resist one by a New Zealand author though.
Once I've read it I have to decide if it is so good it needs to circulate more rather than wait until the 2009 BC Anniversary convention in Christchurch. Don't really think books should lie around in boxes - someone should be reading them, or at least they should be sitting on s Mt TBR somewhere.

Not sure if I approve of the invention of 'fetishistically' as a word though even if it is used by the a reviewer for the Times Literary Supplement

RELEASE NOTES:

I just know I'm not going to have time to read all the books I've put aside to read so bundled together a packet for the bookshelf at Nomads - I'd heard it was getting empty, from someone staying there.
