From an Amazon.com reviewer:
John Steinbeck tells a moving tale of two brothers and how their lives are changed by the people around them. Initially sounding like the biblical story of Cain and Abel, Steinbeck puts a new twist on the traditional story, compelling you to see the characters and your own life from a different perspective. It's amazing to witness your emotions and sympathies shift as the story progresses and it's thought provoking to see Steinbeck's distinction between good and evil. After you finish this book, you will find yourself going over and over the symbolism in the story, how the plots twists, and the insight into the sources of good and evil. This book ranks at the top of "My Most Favorite Books of All Time" list and will spend little time on my bookshelf as I re-read and re-read this book, gaining something new each time.
Will be doing a bookray for this.

* Put the book at the top of your TBR pile (under other rings/rays that arrived first)
* Read the book (take your time and enjoy the book, don't feel rushed to finish it)
* When the end is in sight, check the book's journal and PM the next person to get their address
* Finish the book, make another journal entry and let everyone know what you thought of the book
* Send the book to the next person on the list (please use the cheapest shipping method available), make release notes (Controlled Release) or journal entry to let everyone know that it's in the mail
* END OF THE RAY, The last person on the ray could try and continue the ray or just give/mail the book to someone else who might like to read it, perhaps a RABCK - look at cliff1976.com wish list web site, or release it into the wild.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
Thanks for including me! The book will be off into the post shortly! (Took a while to get ahold of the next bookcrosser, but after a few vacations and some faulty PMs we're up to speed.)
I am headed to the post office right now to send the book along to the next reader. Thank you to Perryfran for sharing!!!
The comparisons to the story of Cain and Abel are interesting, especially the way they carry from one generation to the next.
I don't think I'd like to see the "ABC MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION" for fear I'd upset my husband by throwing things at the TV in disgust. ;)The cover of this book irritates me. It gives a picture that didn't ever happen! The house must be the one on the Trasks' ranch because there's no other building nearby and they didn't have a horse in town. With that dress, the girl can only be Abra - but she was never at the ranch past the age of 10! The guy is likely Cal, but it's hard to say since nothing else makes sense. They may have decided to make Aron dark-haired, or Lee a white guy. meh. I know it's silly, but it bugs me! Plus, the overall makes it look like a sappy love story.
I think I'm just extra grumpy 'cause I'm sick. meh. :D
Send me your addy, perryfran, and I'll get this mailed as soon as I can leave the house - and thanks for sharing. Even though I hate the cover, I like the book. :)

Continuing the bookray to abrokenstarr in the UK. Enjoy!
It's the story of Adam Trask - a boy who has to grow up without his mother to begin with and with a father who clearly loves him but pushes him too hard as a result. It's the story of many lives interwove, from Adam's parents to his half-brother to his own wife and children. It's also the story of his friends, such as Samuel Hamilton, who shakes Adam awake and Lee, his Chinese servant.
Will forward this soon, hopefully this week if I get hold of an address.
The narrative moves from one character to the next with ease, all characters playing an important role in Adam's life.
My only criticism would be the way that some characters just seemed to disappear. I guess that the idea was that Adam was not proactive enough, but not contacting Charles for ten years seemed a little strange.
It has been interesting reading this at the same time as reading 'Of Mice and Men' to my year 11 class, as I can see some similarities.
Anyway, not a bad read, I've read better, I've read worse. I still prefer 'Of Mice and Men'.
Awaiting CaterinaAnna's address and then I'll send it on.
Is currently number three on Mount TBR, but two should be a quick read so should be on its way by the end of the month.
I've only recently read 'The Grapes of Wrath' and much preferred this one. I felt the story moved on more quickly, the balance between narrative and description was more to my taste and the development towards the final word held the book together. It is rare for me to notice a theme in a book without being annoyed by the contrivance, but this was one of the exceptions.
I too was confused & annoyed by the cover - not just because of the points raised above, but also because if it is Aron & Abra, the clothing is of the wrong period for when they were that age. Grr seconded.
Need to go back to 'Of Mice & Men' soon, I suppose.
Have PM'd indygo88 for an address.
