8 out of 10

This is one of those books that while I am reading I keep changing my mind about whether I liked or not. I was quite involved during the middle of the story, but then was disappointed when events started to take a turn for the worse- that is, when the friendships started to fall apart. I then realized that it was unfair of me to dislike the progression of events, since after such a terrible history it would not be possible for them all to live happily ever after. I find fascinating the paradox of mourning a friend and being responsible for his death, and also the lack of guilt, the feeling that they were not bad people, which caused the reader to sympathize and even hope for them to get away with it. This book is brilliant in so many ways; I don't do it justice with this journal entry.

Coincidentally, I read the Bacchae in my own Greek class at my own small New England college just last year. Slightly creepy, yes, but it also made me relate to the characters even more. Not that I was tempted to hold a baccanal, but in that I completely understand when Richard talks about some Greek words or sentiments being untranslatable- even Greek words written with the Roman alphabet seem alien and unrecognizable, removed from their original meaning and context.
