These stories were excellent- especially the first few. Mavis Gallant has a very simple writing style that conceals great depths underneath. She reminds me of Alice Munro a bit (and that's a great compliment from me).

This book had arrived on Friday, and I’m so happy. Another Canadian author I knew nothing about. — I never seem to understand how come Canada has so many wonderful authors. I’m sure Mavis Gallant is one of them. — Besides, this is an ex library book. Great, I love books that have a history of their own. Somehow they speak to me more than new ones. For some odd reason, brand new books intimidate me.
And I’ve got a letter too. Oh, what a joy. How did you know I love them?

Btw, to answer the question you didn’t ask here, my grandmother was Finnish Canadian and that’s why I’ve spent some time there over the years, made some good friends, and learnt to love your country. :) And you guessed right, I will be happy if Obasan gets to travel across Canada. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do.

It took me a long, long time before I started to read In Transit. It also took me a long time to read it. Not because I didn't like it — I did, very much — but because I carried it around and read it only sitting in the hospital lounges waiting for some doctor to see me, riding on buses etc. Yet I remember An Emergency Case and Jeux d'Ete (third and fourth story from the beginning) best. I love them. On the whole I really enjoyed this book.
