I picked this book up with 2 more by this author in Edinburgh last week. They were part of a 3 for 2 offer and I wouldn't have normally picked up all 3 books at once otherwise. Actually I had never heard of this author or the books before but my boyfriend pointed them out and said it sounded like something I would like. So I will blame him if they aren't any good :)

This is the 3rd book in the series -

Synopsis

I really liked this one and couldn't put it down! It was a little weird at times and somehow unrealistic too but it was a great story with twists and turns, interesting characters and great writing.

I will lend this to a friend and then the book will be joining the first 2 in the series on a trip around the world :)

I caught this from Amber as usual...the third installment of forensic scientist Rhona McLeod. She went to California the same time as I did! The author has LA described perfectly, just like her perfect description of Glasgow, I dont doubt her take on Raasay is spot on too. ( Ive never been there, but i have driven past, and found it quite easy to imagine.) I have to say in this one, I found the plot a wee bit too far fetched than the last two books with a few too many coincidences. Everything tied in like knitting. I would have liked a few more red herrings and guesses. But it was an enjoyble read for a sunday afternoon anyway! Will give it back to Amber when I see her next!

A new Lin Anderson!!!! Yay! (Tho what is she doing setting her books in teh US? The hyper-scottishness is one of the best things in her books! I'm sure I'll love it anyway!)

And you already have my plea for being included when the spiral continues :O)

Journal Entry 7 by soleille from Leipzig, Sachsen Germany on Sunday, March 18, 2007
When this book arrived, I was in the middle of Ian Rankin's latest Rebus (The Naming of the Dead, which I can really recommend) and had a bookcrossing visitor from Wales, so Lin Anderson had to wait a bit. I started reading her on Friday afternoon and-you guessed it- this is the third Anderson in a row that is to blame for dark circles under my eyes the next morning!

It was weird indeed, but in a good way, far-fetched? hmmm I couldn't say, I don't expect books to fulfill realistic expectations- it was a great read! And thankfully Rhon wasn't in the US for long!
Both the storyline and the other characters- and how tehy intertwined- were very well done- I'd have a real problem picking my favouritre out of the three novels so far! I just love all her books- well, her Rhona McLeod books, that is: I saw in this book that she is the author of "Braveheart- From Hollywood to Holyrood (lol Freudian typo, I just wrote HolyREAD!)" which I read for a class a while back (for the class that I discovered Scottish crime novels in, by the way!) and didn't care much for it.

One horrible but funny groaner from the cover blurb: you just *can't* start the first paragraph with telling of a severed foot being found and then continue the second with "as the *pieces* start falling into place"!!!!! Insane!

This will now go on and on and on.....

Journal Entry 8 by Twynnie from Royston, Hertfordshire United Kingdom on Sunday, March 25, 2007
This arrived on Friday, very sorry for taking two days to journal it! I have no other rings to read at the moment, so I will start this as soon as I have finished my current book. Thanks again to amberkatze for sharing and soleille for passing it on to me.

Journal Entry 9 by Twynnie from Royston, Hertfordshire United Kingdom on Thursday, April 5, 2007
I think this was the best in the series - it was a very gripping story even if it is probably not what the average Glasgow scientist really does on a day to day basis! I liked the characters of Spike and Esther and they way they eventually fitted into the storyline.

I'll PM clawdette now to check if she is ready to read it...

Update 23/04/2007: Clawdette asked me to wait a while before sending this so I have , but it has gone out today by airmail.

Journal Entry 10 by clawdette from Houma, Louisiana USA on Wednesday, May 23, 2007

A good read but not didn''t keep my attention as much as the other books in this spiral. Releasing to sarradee today.

Journal Entry 12 by sarradee from Mansfield, Texas USA on Monday, August 13, 2007
Arrived safely today. Will journal again when read.

Journal Entry 13 by sarradee from Mansfield, Texas USA on Wednesday, August 22, 2007
The third novel in the Rhona MacLeod, Forensic Scientist series. I thought this book was the most contrived of the three. The severed foot in Scotland with its mysterious link to the exact part of California that Rhona just serendipitiously is scheduled to visit for a conference. I liked the characters of Esther and Spike and thought they were very well drawn up. Overall the story was very good and held my attention it was just a little too tidy, with all the clues fitting neatly into place.

I'll be mailing out to MrsGaskell tomorrow or Friday.

Journal Entry 14 by wingrem_CJL-230711wing on Monday, September 3, 2007
This arrived safely during the week while I was away - it's always nice to find a book in the mailbox when returning home!

I have several reading committments at the moment -bookclub selections and the SIY reading challenge to complete, but I know this will be a quick read so will try to fit it in ASAP.

Journal Entry 15 by wingrem_CJL-230711wing on Sunday, September 9, 2007
I'm with Twynnie - I think this was the best book in the series. I found this case the most interesting, and I liked the characters of Esther, Mrs MacMurdo, and particularly, Spike. I also loved the setting. This was another real page-turner, and, although I agree it was contrived, I think that could be said for the previous books as well as most books in this genre.

Thank you so much Amberkatze for hosting this spiral - I wouldn't have known about this series otherwise. I expect to be seeing gypsysmom in a few days at our bookcrossing meet-up so will be passing the book along then.

Journal Entry 16 by gypsysmom from Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada on Tuesday, September 11, 2007
As promised, mrsgaskell brought this book to our meet-up tonight. I can hardly wait to dive into it but I am presently reading "Suite Francaise" for one of my bookclubs so I want to finish it before I start this.

Journal Entry 17 by gypsysmom from Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada on Thursday, September 20, 2007
I don't know if I can choose a favourite in this series. I did really like this one but I see I gave Driftnet 9 stars and I'm only giving this one 8 stars. That being said, I suspect that I may be becoming more demanding as I become familiar with the series and I think Driftnet and Deadly Code are quite close. The extensive action outside of the main cities of Scotland was very appealing to me. Lin Anderson's statement on the Acknowledgements page "Raasay is a magical island, perhaps my favourite of all the Scottish islands. I hope after reading Deadly Code you too want to learn more of its unique story, wander in its woods, climb Dun Caan and walk Calum's road." certainly came true for me. I have developed a real yen to visit Scotland, especially the islands.

So I hope there are more in this series to come. Thank you Amberkatze for offering up these books. Please think of me if you come across more.

I believe I still have WelshHelen's address but I will pm her to advise her the book is on its way.

Journal Entry 18 by gypsysmom from Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada on Thursday, September 27, 2007
Mailed this to WelshHelen today. Sent it by surface since I was feeling a little poor. Hope it doesn't take too long.

I will most likely send out the ring after Christmas.

Journal Entry 20 by WelshHelen from Ponthenri, Wales United Kingdom on Thursday, December 6, 2007
Arrived safely a couple of days ago, thanks, gypsysmom. It seems to have taken a long time!!

Journal Entry 21 by WelshHelen from Ponthenri, Wales United Kingdom on Thursday, January 3, 2008
I read this in about 2 days over the Christmas holiday and thoroughly enjoyed it - it's probably my favourite of the series, so far. I loved the new characters, especially Spike, who I didn't originally expect to warm to. As others have said, this was a bit more far-fetched than the first books but it certainly kept me turning the pages, so I obviously didn't mind :-)

I've e-mailed AmaniS for the 3rd time just now so if I don't hear back from her by the weekend I'll contact Diamondlucy. I'm just about to PM you, Amberkatze, to put my name on the ring for the new Lin Anderson book :-)

Journal Entry 22 by WelshHelen from Ponthenri, Wales United Kingdom on Wednesday, January 9, 2008
I haven't heard from either AmaniS or Diamondlucy so I'll be posting this on to Rianonne once I'm over this flu bug!

Journal Entry 23 by WelshHelen from Ponthenri, Wales United Kingdom on Friday, January 18, 2008
Finally posted to Rianonne today. Sorry for the delay.

Arrived safe and sound in Vienna! Thanks so much for the nice postcard WelshHelen - now Amberkatze has to help me with pronunciating the words correctly ;)

I've already started reading it this morning on the bus :)

Journal Entry 25 by Rianonne from Wien Bezirk 22 - Donaustadt, Wien Austria on Friday, January 25, 2008
Another page-turner by Anderson :) I was glued to the book in every free minute LOL
It was a great story with many twists and turns which kept me guessing and I liked the interesting characters of Spike, Esther and Mrs. MacMurdo.

Thanks so much Amberkatze for letting me read this spiral! I'm very much interested in reading the next book in the series too :p

Journal Entry 26 by Amberkatze from Wien Bezirk 10 - Favoriten, Wien Austria on Friday, February 22, 2008

I took this book at the Meetup on May 6th.

Everything was so well described, and even though I have never been in Schotland I am pretty sure all her descriptions match reality flawlessly. It was a very nice change of pace, considering all the American thrillers I've read. Some plot twists were just a little too coincidental, but I still enjoyed this book very much nevertheless.

Definitely a great read!
I'd really be interested to read the other books in the series aswell.
