1999; Vintage Contemporaries Edition (PB) 2000. 301 p.

Kent Haruf reveals a whole community as he interweaves the stories of a pregnant high school girl, a lonely teacher, a pair of boys abandoned by their mother, and a couple of crusty bachelor farmers, the back cover says.

Indeed, hardly any of those persons, or any other in the story, is the one and only principal character. The novel tells episodically about people in the small country town Holt, Colorado. If you need a clean plot story and a neat person to identify with, this is not your book. I liked it. I liked the many lovely persons with big heart and common sense. I read this as a story about loving and caring your fellow people, and about the community kind of family. I also liked the open ends of the persons’ lives... just life... (So perhaps I don't read the sequel Eventide:)

Plain has several meanings; 'plainsong' is the unisonous vocal music used in church from the earliest times. Haruf’s text style is plain, too, in a good way. No wonder the book has gathered awards and become a bestseller. If not Great Literature, anyhow it made me happy.

What an enjoyable book! I like Haruf’s writing style, short descriptive sentences, story, which goes straight forward and the characters are so realistic. Ordinary people with there fears and experiences, lonely, abandoned, but still careing of each other, living in a small town called Holt. The story is telling about families, none of them “a normal family”, whose lives are connected together. The story is full of sentiment without being too sentimental. I liked too.
