Loved it, loved it, loved it. I know that many people think that the books of Coelho are mainly filled with 'calender wisdom', but who cares? Sometimes you just need to be reminded of something you did allready know, somewhere at a subconscious level, that was waiting to be triggered by some outside force.

The only other book of Coelho that I have read before is 'the Alchemist', which I did think was a bit over the top on the 'general wisdom and morality' issues, but this book was different. It is not all good times and happy experiences, but it describes the soul search of a woman that goes through some kind of identity crisis. It seems more realistic to me, although it is hard to believe that all these wise words would be thought of by a woman in her early twenties. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it and will probably get a copy for my personal collection.

p 248: "The gospels and all the sacres texts of all religions were written in exile, in search of God's understanding, of the faith that moves whole peoples, of the pilgrimage of souls wandering the face of the Earth."

The book will be on its way to Dutchbooky in a few weeks, since she is now on a holiday until August 25th. Enjoy reading!

Edit: sent August 19th.

Hurray! Another Coelho book to read. Never read anything of his hand before, until I bought The Zahir earlier this year. Read Veronica decides to die after that and joined two Coelho rings (Eleven minutes and The Alchemist).
Hope to start reading this book soon. I have a couple of others to finish first. Thanks for sharing, Bluejazzyfish!

Like Wandering, I just loved this book! It is indeed different from the other books I have read (Veronica decides to die and The Zahir) although those books do have people on a journey too. Maria's world of being a prostitute to me seems a better one than the ones you often hear about, involving drugs and violence.
Along the way she learns a lot about herself, men in general and the world surrounding her. The wise thoughts she has maybe come from these experiences. Towards the end I started feeling a little disappointed because Maria seemed so determined to leave for Brazil, leaving the love of her life behind. I was relieved to find that she is human too and changed her mind!

I have PM'ed Marko for his address!

This was a truely fabulous read. Surprisingly easy to read as well considering the subject.

I marked it down a couple of points only because I felt it treated the subject of prostitution lightly compared to the reality faced by so many woman, but taken on the basis that this is a work of fiction it is still a great book. This was my first Coelho but sure as hell will not be my last.

I must say I am a bit disappointed with the book. It starts out interesting enough but somehow it feels remote and lacking in emotion. I am not offended by the sex scenes, I do not expect it to read like an erotica, and I don''t mean that prositutes can''t have intellectual thoughts, but in some places it feels boring or forced. Nonetheless, there are quite a few enlightening lines that makes this worth a read.

I will mail it back to bluejazzyfish. Thanks so much for sharing and I am glad that this ring completes it round!! (well, almost.)
