Picked up this morning at a car booty
Synopsis
Henry Chester, a domineering and puritanical Victorian artist, is in search of the perfect model. In nine-year-old Effie he finds her. Ten years later, lovely, childlike and sedated, Effie seems the ideal wife. But something inside her is about to awaken. Drawn by her lover, Mose, into a dangerous underworld of intrigue and blackmail, she meets Fanny Miller, the brothel-keeper, and her shadowy daughter, Marta - murdered ten years ago on the day of Henry's weekly visit...And as friendship becomes possession and Henry's secret past is revealed, Effie and Marta plan their revenge together.

Not my favourite from the brilliant Joanne Harris - that would be the wonderful 5 Quarters of the Orange, but this is nonetheless a good - and creepy! - read. Very enjoyable - thanks Lellie for setting this book off on its journey. It's off on its travels again today, heading for Hampshire. Sharon, Nottingham

Just taken this to the post office. Bye little book - have a great journey!

Hmmmm, it's was all a bit hysterical I thought. I do like Victorian Gothic but didn't think Harris quite managed to emulate it, this book had a rather false ring to it I found. Still, it was quite entertaining so I'm still glad I read it.

Will post on to the US using Surface mail so it may take a while, though often surface mail seems to get thrown in with airmail so lets see.

I just finished this tonight. It will be going in the mail tomorrow to paulsbooks. Thanks for sharing it with me!

I enjoyed the book as I have all of Joanne Harris' books, though it was not my favorite of hers. It kept my interest throughout but I'm still not sure that I completely understood what happened. The ending was a bit confusing for me. From the blurb on the back of the book I expected something a bit different.

This was an interesting book. The front cover says it all: "A hauntingly evocative laudanum-dream of a novel."
I will send this on to the next reader!

OMG!!!

I've gone into bookring meltdown here! I have received three in two days. Eck!

But I have every confidence in myself to read all these books and to keep them travelling.
Wish me luck.

Thank you for posting this great book to me.

7 out of 10

Well, I am glad that I read this book.

It was rather like many of Harris' other books:
- mean male character who seeks to destroy our leading lady
- a lusty second male character
- a fairly strong female character, from a harsh background

But, without France, a kid or much mention of food.

I had a fairly hectic week at work, and have to say that a little bit of smutty fluff was exactly what I needed!
Thank you.

Stopped in for a brief stay in India. Shouldn't tarry too long, but probably long enough to pick up a curry stain. ;)

This one was certainly not the best Harris I've read, but it was her first. I could only hope to write as well for my first novel. The story was pretty good but a bit confusing at times. The change of first person was disconcerting and did not help matters at all. My favorite part of the book was the foreward by Ms. Harris herself. I found it interesting how she was reluctant to resurrect her first novel and yet when she did she found she was charmed all over again by her characters and story.

Anyway, thanks for sharing and sorry for keeping it hostage so long. It did manage to escape a curry stain though.

Well...what a disapointment... I was used to the type of writing Joanne Harris did, but this one is very different.
Not her best, I believe, specially after reading The Lollipop Shoes.

Thanks for sharing, lellie.
It's going to inver as soon as I get the adress...

Just dropped through the letter box this morning. Will get to it as soon as I can, but have two more bookrings before this one I'm afraid.

4/9/08 I have started this but have to say I am struggling to enjoy/get into the story. Not sure if I will continue with this one!!

9/9/08 I am sorry to say I have given up. It just wasn't holding my interest. Disappointed as I do like Joanne Harris. I also have a few more bookring to get through and don't want to hold up any for too long. Thanks for the chance to read it though lellie.
