Book has arrived safely, thank you.
How nice to learn that this is not just a BC book, but a special "Paul's Book". I visited paulsbooks.org and read of Paul's short but beautiful life. What a lovely way to keep his memory alive!

This book reminds me a lot of Laura Esquivel's work, as well as those of other South American writers. The touch of magic and fantasy in an otherwise normal story.
After the death of her twelve-year-old daughter, the widow Esperanza is convinced, by a miraculous apparation of a saint on her oven door, that her child has not die. Armed with a box of candles, cards and statues of her saints, the naive and faithful woman leaves her village to embark on a journey to find her daughter, that brings her to the seedy sides of Tijuana and Los Angeles. The unlikely scenarios and events are made pausible by the humbleness and humanity of Esperanza, mixing together into an enchanting tale.
Sending off to dancing-dog!!

This sounds interesting - thanks!
I enjoyed this story - amusing and touching with a little bit of absurdity. Interesting aspects were Esperanza's obsession with finding her daughter (or as Soledad called it, her faith), her relationship with her friend Soledad, the fact that every man falls in love with Esperanza, the priest's dilemma and of course, Esperanza's box of saints. Thanks for sharing this book!

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
Putting this into booklady331's ABC bookbox - hope you enjoy this book!
This looks like a book I'll enjoy, so I have plucked it from the ABC Bookbox!
And enjoy it I did. I love quests, and this one wrapped in magical realism is no exception. I loved Esperanza's passion and determination, her deep, fierce love, and how she ultimately grows into herself. And I've just put "Santitos" at the top of my Netflix queue :)
I will likely either add this to the 'Anything but Romance' bookbox I'm starting or offer it in the Global Fiction vbb, so that this excellent Paul's Book will continue it's journey where it will be sure of journals.

I'm making this book my offering for the current global vbb round . Oddly enough, this round seems to be my Central/North American, as I'm selecting How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents by Julia Alvarez :-p
And I did watch "Santitos," which was fun, quirky, but very shallow, and didn't hold a candle to the book. :-( I'm sure I would have thought better of it had I seen the film first, then read the book.

Esperanza's Saints are about to travel big time: I offered this great book in Dubai's Globall vbb, and it's been chosen by Dancesports, down in Tasmania. Which is high on my list of places I want to see before I die. Sigh... Wish I could send myself along with the book....
