1993 St. Martin's mass-market paperback received in the mail from Salem, Oregon, USA, through PaperbackSwap. I liked the sequel, Black Out.

From the publisher
First in a gripping series of all-new novels inspired by the popular, award-winning NBC series Law & Order. Cerreta and Logan must unravel a tangled trail of fraud and money laundering that leads them to the city's most powerful Mafia kingpin, after two young stockbrokers are attacked while leaving an exclusive athletic club--and one is fatally stabbed.

From the back cover
If you love the NBC-TV show Law & Order, you'll love this riveting, never-before-told story based on the characters from the acclaimed series!

A senseless slaying . . .
A brutal double homicide has the city on the edge -- two young stockbrokers leaving an exclusive athletic club are attacked in broad daylight by a pair of thugs. One of the brokers is fatally stabbed. One of the assailants is shot to death by his friend.

A tangled web of lies and murder . . .
It should be an easy case for N.Y.P.D. detectives Cerreta and Logan to close. But things are not what they seem. Their search for the truth takes them from the city’s seamiest depths to its most luxurious quarters -- until they have enough to deliver the case to District Attorney Ben Stone.

A shocking twist of fate . . .
Together they unravel a tangled trail of fraud and money laundering that leads to the city’s most powerful mafia kingpin -- and explodes in a shocking act of violence on the courthouse steps.

I read this yesterday, then watched some of the Law & Order marathon on TNT. This is from 1993, when Paul Sorvino was still on the TV show.) The books are great -- I only wish there were more than three or four.

The district attorney is this book "Adam Wentworth" -- Arthur Wentworth was the DA in the 1988 TV pilot, but he was replaced by Adam Schiff on the series. Perhaps the character in the book is supposed to be a composite of the two? The rest of the characters are just like the show (Cerreta, Cragen, Logan, Robinette & Stone), but they get to swear.
