The Tiger in the Well

What a brilliant start to this book. Sally is served with papers. Her husband wants their child, Harriet, and her business. The one problem, she's not married and the father of her child is dead.
This starts a race to find out who is behind it. And the web stretches a long way - through Eastern Europe to America, and the Jewish immigrants fleeing persecution.
Brilliantly written and difficult to put down once you've started. Not as good as His Dark Materials series, but very close.
Hope you enjoy

Thank you so much. :) I've just received this today, and I'm really looking forward to reading it. Number 32 on Mt. TBR... Eeeek!
This seems to be the third book in the Sally Lockhart Trilogy. :)
19th February 2007
I very very very much enjoyed this! Philip Pullman has such a wonderful style of writing, and he has such strong characters! How great!
I was a little disappointed that it's not the first book in the series - I know now that the first one is "The Ruby in the Smoke", and Sally Lockheart is 16 in it - in this one she's 24, and pretty grown up! But fortunately, Mr. Pullman has very kindly explained a little bit of Sally's history and doesn't assume that we'll know all the characters already. So that's nice. :)
Long ago I promised this book to Flambard, so I'm going to see if he's still up for it!

It has arrived! Many many thanks!
The sequel to The Ruby In The Smoke and The Shadow in the North, this book is a thrilling tale full of deceit, confusion, fraud, murder, persecution, secrets, greed ... not to mention love and friendship. The complex plot is engaging and well-paced and thankfully (unlike The Shadow in the North) does not deteriorate towards the end. An excellent read.

Thank you so much to flambard for sending this to me. I signed up for a spiral for these books but due to real life getting in the way I've had to pull out and I put these on my wishlist instead. I shall now cross this one off and hope that it doesn't take me too long to get to it!
