A memoir by American jounalist Emily Prager about the search for her adopted daughter's roots in today's China. In 1994, Prager adopted seven month old Lulu in China. Five years later she returned to spend three months in Wuhu city, where Lulu had been found on the street. Within a week of her arrival NATO bombed the Chinese embassy in Belgrade, and anti-American feeling ran high. Prager, Lulu and the townspeople became involved in a relationship that stood politics and prejudice on its head.

7 out of 10

I had read "Roger Fishbite" by Emily Prager and liked it very much so I thought I'd give this one a try too since I have an interest in both Chinese culture and the subject of international adoption. I wasn't disappointed and I'm looking forward to reading more of her books. The diary lists their activities in Wuhu and gives simple descriptions of the places and people they see during their stay. But it's not just a travel diary, it is also the story of wuhuren Lulu and about discovering her birthplace the same way she did, with curiosity and without prejudice. The author's love for her daughter transpires throughout the book and the memories of the time she spent in Taiwan as a child are relevant and helpful in undestanding her background; she also makes interesting observations using her knowledge of history. One of my favourite lines is: 'just when you think China has abandoned you, she turnes around and picks you up again'. The letter at the end of the book is honest and moving, I'm glad she included it.

Since this copy is a hardback and can still withstand many readings, it would be a shame to release it in the wild so soon; so I'm asking its next readers to let the book travel for as long as possible from bookcrosser to bookcrosser, a Roaming RABCK if you will. Thank you.
