I don't mind about the intrigue only coming half way through. I don't read these books for the suspense anyway - it's more to read about all the messes Sookie gets in and about the humour. Enjoyable and comfortable reading. I looked it up, the next one, "All together dead", is due to be published in March 2007. Edited this by making the font colour white, as it's a bit of a spoiler. If you want to read it, just select the paragraph with your cursor: Seems like an awfully long wait to see, how that vampire conference will play out. Will Peter Threadgill be there? And will Sookie and Amelia get along, so close together? And will Bob be turned back successfully? And will Jake appear again? Will HE turn? And what does that mean for Sookie, after all he bit her! Will Bill hang around? And when are we going to get some hot steamy sex between the new love interest and Sookie? And what about Sam? He is such a nice guy, will he ever get a shot? And what the heck is a beignet? |

I've said this before and I'll say it again, I love this series. When I became jaded with the Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton I switched to this one and haven't looked back. It's what I was looking for in one of these types of books. Some fantasy and mythical creatures with a little bit of mystery and not too much heroics from the main character. Here's the bit from the inside flap: As a person with so few living relatives, Louisiana cocktail waitress Sookie Stackhouse really hated to lose one. But she never guessed that would be her cousing Hadley - a consort of the vampire queen of New Orleans. After all, technically speaking, Hadley was already dead. And now, as unexpected heir to Hadley's estate, Sookie discovers the inheritance definitely comes with a risk. For a little bit there, I have to admit that I was starting to think that maybe Harris was going the way of Hamilton, though. For a bit there were too many males vying for Sookie's attention, especially in a scene where Sookie has to fake having sex with someone to fool some dangerous vamps. I recall this same scenario happening repeatedly in Hamilton's books. The difference is that the context saved it for being written and hopefully Harris won't start finding more and more pretexts for this type of thing like bad porn where the plot is just a vehicle for the "main event." Even though there were more than the average number of guys after Sookie I think it was handled well. I think what I like most about her character is how down-to-earth she is. She's not overly "sophisticated." That is, she's just a girl from small-town Lousiana and she has yet to get too big for those britches. The resolution was great and Sookie was quite clever. Hey! I'm trying not to give any spoilers! But the ending left me impatient to see what happens next when Sookie goes to a special vampire "conference." Do you think they'll have Powerpoint presentations and droning speakers? :D |
