This is a great heart warming story! I can't believe how lucky Mrs. Ryan was - although maybe it wasn't all luck. In retrospect its sad that someone who had such a talent could only put it to use contesting, but it does seem that contesting worked for her!

Terry Ryan reads this abridged version of her book and does a fantastic job. This is one of those stories about an everyday, ordinary person who has extraordinary things happen to them - and who happens to have a daughter who will write about it!

I was interested in the story behind a lady that brings home a small living contibution from contests in the 50s and 60s USA. I never realised that it was such a large and serious concern, using a lot of creativity and networking with other contestants.

I was a little frustrated that Mrs Ryan couldn't go out and find a job!! After all with 10 children at home she could have easily brought a lot more money into the house by asking them to at least do some of the household tasks. She seems to have brought up a family that couldn't do the basics and left everything to their mother. Father being an alcoholic and pretty useless for anything but siring children!!
