About an impossible love between two men. It should't have been a short story.

Journal Entry 5 by iiwi from Utrecht, Utrecht Netherlands on Wednesday, May 24, 2006
A book as a three minute song; before you know it it has ended. I was growing accustomed tot English (always takes a couple of pages) and the Western slang, and I was allready half way. Then onwards it became beautifull. The subtle moments when the two men connect with each other are beautifull written. Even in the short story the landscape comes to you as a widescreen movie. The shirts... *sigh*

The way Proulx succeeds in painting the struggle of these two men is breathtaking. With a few well-chosen words two lives unroll against the background of a beautiful landscape. The story is a real gem. Thanks!

*sigh* Now I know what you mean by "The shirts... " iiwi... A beautiful and sad story. It's difficult to say more about it, because it was only ca 50 pages. I wouldn't mind more pages, but then it wouldn't be a short story. The book is on it's way to Suzy26!

Beautiful short story. I found it quite moving the way the author described the tender feelings these rough cowboys have for each other although they have to deny this in every which way they can, even to themselves. I too loved the part about the shirts! On to Gnoe it goes....

Journal Entry 12 by Gnoe from Utrecht, Utrecht Netherlands on Saturday, June 17, 2006
Finishing the book left me with the same deeply sad feeling as seeing the movie did. Reading the book didn't add much (although I was curious if what happens to Jack was director Ang Lee's input or originally Proulx') and it was a bit.. confusing to read the story so soon after I had seen the film. Maybe I should 've waited a bit longer. Ang Lee has re-arranged some details but in all does the story justice. And takes a slower pace than Proulx does! Beautiful and tragic. Off to JonnaL it is!

Journal Entry 14 by JonnaL from Utrecht, Utrecht Netherlands on Tuesday, June 20, 2006
Read this book yesterday, and don't know what I think of it... I'm not quite sure whether the story is a complete succes. The events of the story stretch over a period of 20 years, which I find rather long for a short story of only 55 pages (whith little text on each). Sometimes the style is really heterogenic: detailed description of small details while the overall story races past; overviews and pagelong dialogue next to each other; scrambled narrator's voice - 'detached' ce here, 'slang' there (though I read the book a bit to fast to be sure where it was a parafrase of thoughts, and where not). But my main problem - and this is MY problem, not the story's - is that it's too little time since I saw the movie, so I keep getting reminded of how the movie was told and which images accompanied which scenes etc., to be able to judge the story on it's own merits. But of course I felt tears pressing, both at the prologue and at the ending.... And today I'm going to cycle 10 km to bring to the book to LenaLena.

Finished the book in one reading. Absolutely one of the best novels I have read. I like the way the writer succeeds to describe the feelings between the men in only a few words. I like the raw way of describing the events. I will send out the book next week to Monalisaa, if I have got her address. Thanks for sharing this book with us hellehond!
