This book is the first in a series of books about the Larkin family of rural England and although the date is not given it is probably set sometime in the late 50's when the book was written. Ma and Pop Larkin have 6 children, the eldest of whom is the beauteous Mariette. At the beginning of the book, Cedric Charlton from the Tax Department has come to the Larkin farm to try to get Pop Larkin to file an income tax form. Pop finds this astonishing and when he notices Mr. Charlton is beguiled by Mariette he sets out to divert his attention from his job to his daughter. He succeeds wildly and soon Mr. Charlton is being called Charley and going strawberry picking with the family. The eating, drinking and merrymaking are nonstop.

Maybe I'm losing my sense of humour because I did not find this book to be all that funny. There were some parts that were amusing and it was a quick read. I can also see how it would translate into a good TV series which apparently has made the Larkin family famous anywhere British television is shown.

Maybe it will appeal to some other reader so I will release it for the 2006 Never Judge a Book by its Cover challenge - Week 27 (domestic cats). The cover on my book shows the whole family clustered around the table and Ma Larkin has a white cat on her lap.

I was out taking a quick walk on my coffee break, when I spotted the book on top of the cabinet. I used to check this site all the time but had lost the url.. So finding it was hugely exciting. My family and I will be reading the book and the releasing it back in to the wild...

I was in Winnipeg for a few weeks doing a show with the Fringe, I stopped to check my e-mail one day and found this book at the performer's internet station. I have to admit the book didn't intrigue me as much as the message inside it did. this is the first time I've ever heard of the book crossing club! I never knew something like this exsisted, and now that I do!!! It's exciting, I do a fair bit of travelling, and now I have an extra little hobby to add on to my adventures. As soon as I got back to Edmonton I went through my library and selected books that I've always kept just to lend to others to read. I'm excited to get the opportunity to add them to the world library and see where they go.
Thank-you so much to... whoever left this book for me.
