I'm pretty sure I read this many years ago but I don't remember much about it. I bought this copy for my mother-in-law because she has macular degeneration. She has now read it and given it back to me.

From the back of the book:
She was born Santa Fe Cameron; her mother was high-born Spanish, her father an aristocratic Scot. By her seventeenth birthday her only home had been a slum in New Mexico; nine years later she was married to one of the wealthiest men on Wall Street. She had a magnetism more memorable than physical beauty, and extraordinary powers for good and evil. In New Mexico some called her a saint, but that was at the end of her eventful career.

I picked up this book at La Garage Cafe in Winnipeg's French Quarter where the previous reader left it. The cafe isn't in my neighbourhood...I was there only because I was with someone who's friend owned the shop. The book was on the coffee table and noticed that the person who last read it goes by the online name gypsysmom. Serendipity perhaps... since my online name is gypsywinds. I also spent some time in Santa Fe and was looking to revive some good memories. I found the main character's life to be one of intense sadness which made for less than upbeat reading material. The underlying theme of the story appears to be about the effect the choices we make have on our ability (or inability) to fulfill the purpose of our existance.
