Synopsis (from Amazon.co.uk):

Leo Gursky is a man who fell in love at the age of ten and has been in love ever since. These days he is just about surviving life in America, tapping his radiator each evening to let his upstairs neighbour know he's still alive, drawing attention to himself at the milk counter of Starbucks. But life wasn't always like this: sixty years ago in the Polish village where he was born Leo fell in love with a young girl called Alma and wrote a book in honour of his love. These days he assumes that the book, and his dreams, are irretrievably lost, until one day they return to him in the form of a brown envelope. Meanwhile, a young girl, hoping to find a cure for her mother's loneliness, stumbles across a book that changed her mother's life and she goes in search of the author. Soon these and other worlds collide in "The History of Love", a captivating story of the power of love, of loneliness and of survival.

I just couldn't get back into this one once I put it down :-( I kept trying but have decided it really isn't for me (despite feeling like I'm missing out by not finishing it...I think there is a great story in there somewhere *grin*). I think I'm just in a slump and *nothing* is pleasing me at the moment! I'll be sending this out to a very patient DreamSE22 shortly - hope you have better luck with it than I did!

Thank you VERY MUCH for sending me this book! And of course, no worries about the delay, you should know by now I'm extremely easy-going about that. :)

I must say I'm glad I'm not the only bookcrosser/relayer who goes through slump phases. Sometimes I think its worse when you promise TBRs to people because then you're forced to read the book although you're not in the mood for it, which doesn't always make for a good reading experience. I hardly do that anymore for that reason, because I'll end up quitting the book when I'm not in the mood, lol!

Sometimes I feel guilty because I'll start reading a renowned "good" book (Like Saturday by Ian McEwan-blech!), then feel like an idiot because I didn't like it and everyone else did. I then question my intelligence because I feel like I missed something, and I have to justify why I didn't like it in a journal entry because all the people before me were like "Great book, blah blah blah, off to DreamSE22, I KNOW you'll LOVE it!" I only mention that because I know this is one of those "renowned-good" books.

Either way, I'm grateful you sent this to me, cats-eye. Now I'm very curious, as always, LOL! ;)

2 out of 10

I didn't like this book either. I couldn't get through it and I thought the style was very erratic and silly. I know the author may have been trying to create a mood by writing the book from Leo's point of view, odd as he was, but I really am growing tired of the amateurish writing format & language being done in literature these days.

Best of luck to the next reader! :)

A bookcrossing book! You don't get many of those from pbs.

Dream's review really got my curiosity piqued. Will probably read the book just to see how amateurish the writing and language is. One of my colleague has read it and really liked it. But then she's the type of person who can't understand why people read the "ridiculous junk" put out by Nora Roberts and others. If only she knew what kind of "junk" I like to read in my spare time...

Hum...maybe this particular book is cursed :) I didn't like it any more than cats-eye or Dreams did and only got through the first part narrated by Leo through pure force of will. Would this book be considered written in the stream of consciousness style? Either way, I can't seem to get myself to pick it up again. This book is going to Giz-Angel so we'll just have to wait and see how she likes it.

First of all thanks to sidney and Rosie :)

I read this a couple of months ago cos it was sent to me as a RABCK, which is great cos it means I can release this one without any guilt!!!!! How fabulous! However, I looked at my JE to see what I said about it when I read it and I said nothing at all really. I did read it, it's 24 on my list, and I remember being mildly irritated by the writing style.... but it's not stayed with me in a real sense. I have read the blurb and I can remember the story but not how it ended. *shrugs*

Anyway I will find a new home for it shortly :)
