"A man dies from a tumour, so how can a country survive with growths like labour camps and exiles." This masterpiece tells the story of a group of patients and doctors, set in a hospital ward in 1950s Russia. This setting is a microcosm of the whole society, with representatives of the Communist Party, Gulag prisoners, stressed medics and ordinary sufferers.

This book was more enjoyable than I had figured. Even though the action takes place in the 50s and the bookw as written in the 70s, it was still quite modern. Treatment for cancer has changed over the years, but the feelings of patients and staff remained the same. It took me a while to read this well written book, but it was worth it.
