Journal Entry 4 by LyzzyBee from Birmingham, West Midlands United Kingdom on Tuesday, September 19, 2006
This was an amazing book. It charts the life of McCall through his very troubled younger years, a spell in prison and trying to make something of himself afterwards. Some of the scenes of rape, drug taking and violence are very explicit, but never gratuitous - I really do think he needs to show this, his reactions to it at the time, and his reactions to it later, in order to help the reader understand his interior life, positions and values. I'm not quite able to let go of this one, so I'm going to save it up and offer it in the next slew of rings.

Journal Entry 11 by Iojima from Nyons, Rhône-Alpes France on Monday, January 22, 2007
His childhood seems one of relentless misery, starting with parents who called him "Nigger" when he misbehaved, a grandmother who held up white children as role models, school-mates whose status-game was the put-down, with apparently no one teaching them good behaviour toward others. Whatever love and discipline were in his working-class home -- and it appears to have been a good home -- get only a passing mention. He's gone straight, he writes well, his anger still defines him. I don't know how to rate this. It gives you some insight into mindset of angry, young black men, but it is so self-centred that it's hard to believe anyone can learn anything constructive from it. Off to rumble-bee.

Merci, Iojima! The book arrived savely last week-end. I'm a little surprised; I thought it would be shorter. Well, I'll see what I can do to fit it in in the time required.
